Until 1979 Rhodesia had only few armoured cars like Eland 90 and 60 and few older ferrets. On October 1979 Rhodesia was donated by South Africa with 8 Polish made T-55LD (produced in 1975). These tanks were confiscated by South Africa on ship called "Astor" on the way to Uganda. This ship departed from Libya. Official version was that these tanks was captured in Mozambique to prevent South Africa from another sanctions.
After arrival of T-55 in Rhodesia, tanks became part of Rhodesian Armored Car Regiment, E Squadron. Tanks was delivered in Libyan camouflage consisting of light sand and green colors. With help of South African advisors, tanks were repainted in SA anti-strela camouflage consisting of dark earth and green colors. The Soviet-manufactured radios were removed from the tanks and replaced with the South African radios and headsets used on the Eland 90 AFVs.
Some photos shows tank crews posing in front of T-55, you can see them wearing Rhodesian brushstroke jumpsuit overalls, issued boots, chi-com chest webbings and south african helmets for tank crews, armed with brand new AKMS (also from Poland as equipment of T-55 crews).

LOVE this thread as well....AWESOME guys!! Keep them coming...... ;):)

I'm pretty sure the guy in the top pic with the RPD is not a Selous Scout but actually a Vietnam 5th SFGA MACV-SOG trooper in black 'nam slant pocket jungle fatigues, and those are Sikorsky H-34 Kingbee helos of the 219th Helicopter Sqn. The unique webbing kit also bear that out. I took this from the 219th VNAF site: The 219th was with SOG from the beginning: After the 219th's Kingbees inserted the first SOG Shining Brass Reconnaissance mission from FOB-1.

Sorry for my mistake. The mod on RPD (shortening the barrel) is identical to the one from Rhodesia. So, I grouped it with the rest.
