The chiefs of Germany's intelligence services briefed parliament on the security situation in Europe today, painting a rather grim picture. Martin Jaeger, head of the federal intelligence service (BND), warned that "at best, there is an icy peace in Europe, which can erupt into an actual armed confrontation at any moment. We must be prepared for further escalation". Referring to an often-cited military situation report that, due to its losses in Ukraine, Russia could not confront NATO militarily before 2029, he added: "We must not sit back and assume that a Russian attack will not come before 2029". Moscow's goal, he said, was to coerce Europe into aligning with Russia. "To achieve this goal, Russia will not shy away from a direct military confrontation with NATO if necessary". Asked to give an assessment of Germany's current situation, Jaeger pointed to evidence for a string of sabotage actions, airspace violations, disinformation campaigns and targeted killings, concluding: "We're already under fire".
