Rather a dreary day here - rain & snow mixed. Which is great since it's been very dry. Not much going on, though so I looked through my book pile for things I haven't read in years. Like Caporetto and the Isonzo Campaign. Much like Verdun, thousands of lives were outright wasted due to incompetents in command.
For my money, General Cardona should have been hanged for the way he frivolously wasted so many of his soldiers' lives attacking uphill against the same Austro-Hungarian lines time after time, resulting in no gains at all.
Even at that, it was perilous duty - no fewer than 80,000 soldiers were lost in avalanches alone. And that's not counting losses from hypothermia on both sides. A somber read, indeed.
