Once, after returning from an excursion into the third world, we discovered the unit had been blessed with an ancient E-8, a supernumary, only minutes from retirement. In an SF environment he was totally helpless, not being qualified for anything. As usual, payroll was messed up and had to pay us our TDY pay in a special payroll. The E-8 was delighted to have been assigned the duty. The detachments involved were assembled and formed in ranks.
"Okay, men, when I call out your name, sound off, I'll tell you how much money you get. After we're done, you line up and report inside to the pay officer." He started down the list of names, "Adams!"
"Here, Sergeant!"
"Two hundred twenty five dollars."
"Benson!"
"Here, Sergeant!"
"Three hundred dollars."
On down the list the sergeant continued until he called the last name.
"Totals!" No response. "TOTALS!" he roared, irritated. Still no response. "G*******T TOTALS, WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME YOU BETTER SPEAK UP!" By now we were all rolling on the ground. "At ease, you buncha clowns! Totals has more money coming then any of you."
