Here in the United States, today, September 11, is designated by an act of Congress as Patriot Day. This is in remembrance of the day that America was attacked by terrorist on September 11, 2001 and almost 3,000 Americans were killed. It is a discretionary day of remembrance, to some, it is business as usual. All national government flags are to be flown at half-staff and most state and local agencies follow suit. It is requested that all Americans stop and have a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time of the first plane impacting the first tower of the two World Trade Center towers in New York City on September 11, 2001. The day of remembrance is for all those who died that day, not only the victims at the World Trade Centers. The victims at the Pentagon and those brave Americans that forced the premature crash of their hijacked plane at Shanksville, Pennsylvania are also mourned. It seems now that there are also many people who responded to the scene, in New York City, and valiantly tried to find and rescue injured victims that are now suffering from respiratory and other health issues that the government seems to ignore. Again, today is a special and sad day here in America, and I can only assume that if not for the events of September 11, 2001, we would not be in Iraq today.
