Russia:
A unique visitor departing the Mare Island Navy Yard on 11 November 1942, the Soviet Submarine S-55.
During the Summer of 1942 the Soviet Navy decided to relocate several submarines from their bases in the Pacific to bolster the Northern Fleet, S-55 being one of these submarines. The safest route for these submarines would through the Panama Canal.
S-55 departed Vladivostok on 5 October 1942 and first traveled to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. From there, she traveled down the West Coast to Mare Island Navy Yard. S-55, along with the submarines S-51, S-54 departed Mare Island Navy Yard at the end of November for the Panama Canal, escorted by a group of United States destroyers.
Once they passed through the Canal, the submarines resupplied at the United States submarine base at Coco Solo before departing on December 5 and making for Halifax, Canada. They departed Canada on Christmas Day and arrived at Rosyth in the United Kingdom in January. The submarines spent some time in the United Kingdom before completing the journey to their Northern Fleet bases.
