The California had been laid down in 1914 as a cargo liner for the Cunard Line, with the name Albania. Completed in 1920 because of the Great War, she was not successful, and was eventually sold to an Italian company in 1930.

Requisitioned by the RM to serve as a "wounded/sick transport" (not as a proper hospital ship, because this way they could be used to transport troops and materiel as well) for the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935, she was converted into a proper hospital ship (with 770 beds) in 1940.

She would be sunk at Siracuse in the night between 10 and 11 August 1941, by a torpedo dropped by a British bomber; Italian propaganda denounced the fact, but the ship hadn't had her lights on, as prescribed by the international law.

Mount Hood was loaded with 3800 tons of ammunition including shells and bombs. The biggest section of the ship they found following the explosion was 16ft long. The only way they could tell where the ship had been was by 50ft deep crater in the sea bed.

She was in service in the Swedish fleet between the years 1931 and 1943 and was a part of the Gothenburg Squadron together with the submarines HMS Gripen (1928) and HMS Draken (1926). During an exercise the submarine probably hit a German mine and blew up on April 15, 1943 in the so-called Ulven Disaster. The entire crew of 33 men died. Only after 19 days a fishing boat located HMS Ulven at a depth of 52 meters southwest of the island of Stora Pölsan and after another three months the wreck was salvaged.

An Indonesian Navy submarine disappears north of Bali and Indonesian Coast, A search and rescue operation has begun for the submarine the KRI Nanggala-402, which has disappeared with 53 people on board, according to the country's authorities. Some reports say contact was lost after the sub was cleared to dive into deeper water. "The Navy is currently looking for it. We know the area, but it is quite deep," First Admiral Julius Widjojono told the AFP news agency. Authorities have asked Australia and Singapore to assist in the search. The ship is one of five submarines operated by Indonesia. It was made in the late 1970s and underwent a two-year remodel in South Korea that was completed in 2012.

Indonesia asked Singapore and Australia for help. According to the commander-in-chief of the Indonesian armed forces, Hadi Chahyanto, the submarine may be located 700 meters deep. In addition to the Nanggala, the Indonesian Navy has another submarine from the same project, the Chakra (number "401"), both commissioned in 1981. Both submarines underwent a medium repair at DSME Corporation's shipyards in South Korea in 2009-2012. Indonesia, April 21, 2021.
