I'm seeking images of the popular British WWII cartoon character "Mr. Chad". It is widely reported that "Chad" was seen chalked on the fuselage of an Operation Market Garden glider asking "Wot, no engines?" but I have been unable to locate a photo. Any other "Chad" cartoons ("Wot, no beer?", "Wot, no ciggies?", etc.) appreciated as well. Thanks!

Mr Chad and Kilroy was here

I'm afraid I can't help much with the photo your hoping for, but here are some links to the story behind Mr Chad:

Mr Chad is also linked to the American Kilroy, the history behind "Kilroy was here" can be found on this site:

    Wikipedia has some more stories:

Even snopes.com has picked up on Kilroy was here:

There's plenty more out there, just picked up on some of them.

    Mr Chad and Kilroy

I'm familiar with all of that information (although the rafcaa.org.uk version was new to me). It seems likely Mr Chad was the creation of George Edward Chatterton, a cartoonist at the Daily Mirror in the late 1930s who drew the cartoon "Chad by Chat". I've been building up the courage to buy a temporary pass to the Mirror's digital archive -- it is not inexpensive -- to start digging through back issues for Mr Chad. Still, the glider photo would be wonderful if it can be found. Thanks for your help!

    Thanks, but ...

... I'm looking for an actual photograph of Chad on a glider (or elsewhere). For being such a common WWII caricature, it has been impossible -- so far -- to find an authentic Chad.
