If ever in Houston, TX, make the short 40 minute drive south to the island city of Galvston on the sunny coast. Visit the Lone Star Flight museum. For an aviation buff, I would rate it a 7 on our scale. They have a wonderful assortment of WWII era aircraft, most of them flightworthy. The presentation is nice, two large hangars and one detached hangar, 1940s music, period cars and displays, but the well maintained aircraft are simply beautiful.
Some of what they have-
P-47D
P-40N
P-64 (North American fighter variant of the AT-6, one of only 6 in existance)
A-20, fully operational
B-17, B-25
FG-2 Corsair
Some mark of Spitfire (I haven't seen it yet)
T-37
B-58 Hustler (display, not operational!)
F-100 Super Saber (also display)
PB4Y2 Privateer
C-47
Fairey Firefly
and more. I haven't been in a while but they have open weekend fly-ins twice a year and participate in airshows nationwide. The fly ins are casual events, you get to be among the moving aircraft within reason, but close than most airshows.
Well worth a visit.
While in Galveston visit the USS Seawolf, a WWII era Balao class submarine (in post war SSK hunter killer configuration) at Galveston's Seawolf park. This sub was landlocked and visiotrs can go through the sub. They are working on a complete overhaul and preservation project currently.
Also stop by the San Jacinto Battleground in LaPorte, on the way back to Houston, where General Sam Houston led the Texians to independence from Mexico in 1836. A huge monument is in place there, as well as the USS Texas a WWI and WWI veteran dreadnaught battleship. Recently drydocked and overhauled she is in pristine 1944 condition.
Navla buffs can't see a US dreadnaught anywhere else.
