During the War various Types of small boats were employed for use in a variety of missions. The Boston Whalers, Kenner ski barges as well as engineering boats were fitted with M-60 machine guns. These boats (like the one in the photo) were used to patrol coastal ports, conduct searches of sampans and junks on inland rivers as well as conduct recon and ambush missions. Also used for transport and other non-combat roles.

The boat in the photo looks like one of he engineering style boats.

Conduct a search of the internet using the words "Boston whaler" and "Vietnam" and some images of these small boats will appear.

Thanks for posting the photo. It is neat.

I hope this helps.

Operation Game Warden covered inland waterways in the Mekong Delta. Task Force 116 was the primary Task Force assigned to Game Warden. This is the famed brown water navy which included primarily PBRs, LSTs, LSDs, and MSBs.

Operation Market Time covered the coastal waterways of Vietnam and was the responsibility of Task Force 115. Swift Boats, CG cutters, and other maritime patrol assets were the primary craft utilized.

My father was a sailor with River Section 533 67-68 before we was wounded in action.

@Angkar I believe that is Edsell Class Destroyer Escort USS Forester (DE-334) which eventually was transferred to the Republic of Vietnam Navy in 1971. Renamed at that time to RVNS Trần Khánh Dư (HQ-04). After the fall of the South she was captured in shipyard and renamed VPNS Dai Ky (HQ-03).

Thank you! Your information is very good! Thank you! Thank you very much!

HQ-551 is an old WWII 1400 class landing craft donated by the US Navy and US Army. We used those in nam in the early years.

Do you have any more pics of your dads unit and boats? I am trying to locate some guys I served with on the Mekong River Maze. BaldbiearsNV

@BaldbigearsNV I would if I had access to them, they are with him on the other side of the country. I’ll see if I can poke and prod him to scan some more. He was with River Section 533 and in the My Tho area if memory serves correctly.

You on FB? There is a decent Operation Gamewarden closed group with many vets participating. Might be a good place to check.
