India bought the Mi-4 in the early 1960's to fulfil the role of a medium lift helicopter. The Mi-4 is similar in appearance to the Sikorsky S-55 which was also used by the IAF. The design was unique with the engine being front mounted.
It was used extensively during the 1971 war famously for the Meghna heli bridge (operation cactus lilly) to eventually capture Dhaka. 14 helicopters were used to drop 700 troops and equipment across the river Meghna.
