Times has changed a lot. There is more intermixing of the varous people of Asia now than then.

When you considered many Americans did not know one Asia person from another, the ability of Japanese to "blend" could have been very deadly. One also did not want some GI shooting the wrong person.

Probably Prior WWII, it was easy to listen to a American and figured what part of the US they were from. People did not move as much as now.
