Despite this, old Fred is less popular than Olaf, which is a remarkable achievement.
Like I said, the media have always hated him, ever since he voted against making marital rape a crime back in 1997 (on procedural grounds, I might add). And they'll continue to write him into the ground. Throw enough dirt at someone, and some is going to stick.

Not that Merz is without fault. Many conservative voters hated that he campaigned on fiscal austerity, only to incur huge debts post election.

Moreover, the way he handles the press just isn't good. His brand would work better if he took a page out of Trump's book and just didn't pay attention to what the press is writing about him. Instead, he appears butthurt more often than not.

In other news, the German government has banned 'Muslim Interaktiv' today, a "TikTok Islamism" organisation which previously made national headlines holding rallies with signs reading "caliphate is the solution". Several objects linked to the group were searched by police, and propaganda material and funds were seized. Presenting a long list of evidence, the Interior Ministry charges that 'Muslim Interaktiv' violates the constitutional order in Germany by promoting hatred against Jews and denying the equality of women. (Source) According to a 2024 report, the group had a membership of less than 2,000 people at the time, but attracted hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok.
The ECHR is a problem, but not so much the text itself. It's more what courts have done with it, especially national courts. British courts in particular have extended the scope of the convention far beyond its original design. I hear both Reform and the Tories want to leave the ECHR? That's not going to do much. You'd have to upend your own constitutional judicature.

I know.

Personally, I’d favour doing what we want to do, and taking the American view, I.e. I’ll see you in court.

Our judges seem to look for any reason to let the person stay, to avoid legal challenge. How we don’t have a woman that was raped challenging this, I don’t know.

At the moment we are going to elect farage, on his claim of sorting it. I really hope he means it, and won’t convert to the ah it’s difficult regime, upon winning.

Just like with Wilders the public servant caste and legal system would completely clip his wings. And the next election he gets voted out because the public feels like he hasn't achieved anything and are fed up with the daily drama conjured up by the MSM and just wants things to go back to normal.

Quite possible, but his policy on indefinite leave to remain, suggests he is thinking about how to do it. At the moment polls say this is where we are going, don’t forget our winner takes all voting system leads to strong governments, rather than neutered Co-alitions.

I honestly thought he was literally going to go door to door, show your Id type approach. The chaos this would produce, would kill it off.

I’m still expecting Starmer to do something, he is clearly easily led, and at the moment, to be really hard on immigration, is probably his only play, if he wants the next 5 years.

You know, I can't help myself … F*** the public. We'll complain about being lied to by politicians, but do we reward honesty, realism and caution? Of course we don't. The right side of the aisle has become particularly guilty of this, I think.

"Perfect is the enemy of good", wrote Voltaire. Yet still we'd rather vote for "perfect" than "good", even if the former means remaining empty-handed. At least we felt good about ourselves.

From what I hear, he's already retracted his promise there'll be tax cuts.

Right now, he’s right. That’s not the priority, and it’s not what he may get elected for. I’ve previously mentioned U.K. has in the 600 years of democracy, elected single issue governments, he should stick with immigration, crime and welfare, and promise minimal tax changes, and based on what they find when they get in.

I’d add, that the electorate are used to politicians lying, so if he has his hand in the drawer, ok, but sort the key issues you said you would sort.

A brutal custody battle in Germany's high society has turned into somewhat of a thriller after a court trial discovered links to the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and Israel's Mossad. The plot involves the wealthy heiress of the Blockhouse restaurant chain, her news anchorman boyfriend, an Israeli private military contractor, a former BND director, and the head of the Hamburg Port Authority. (Source) .
[…]
The indictment claims she asked family friend August Hanning, the former head of Germany's BND, for help. It is alleged that Hanning used his associates in BND and Mossad to have ex-agents pointed out to him who might be willing to kidnap the Block children for money.
Former BND director Hanning has been charged with organising a previous attempt to kidnap the Block children in Denmark. Likewise charged with conspiracy and attempted kidnapping was his business associate Thomas Mehles, previously deputy director of the Hamburg State Police bureau of investigation (LKA). Their security consulting company 360° is alleged to have hired six active police officers from the LKA to kidnap the Block children on their daily commute to school in November 2022. Danish police thwarted the plot and arrested the officers. They placed the father and children under police protection and gave them radio panic buttons, which would pinpoint their location via GPS and also make audio recordings. The Israeli team realised this only half an hour into the second kidnapping attempt, after which time enough incriminating evidence against them had already been retrieved. (Source)

What the actual hell is going on …
And how on earth did this coterie think they'd get away with crap like this?

Hätt ja klappen können... ;-) / It could have worked... ;-) Joking aside, for people who work for the police themselves, this is a sad reflection on them. Could it be that they haven't properly understood their job?

AfD is descending into civil war between its right-wing populist and Neo-Nazi wings after a bizarre talk show appearance of co-chairman Tino Chrupalla, who is representing the latter. The bone of contention was a planned meeting between AfD parliamentarians and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Asked to explain his opposition to co-chairwoman Alice Weidel's instructing AfD members not to travel to the meeting, Chrupalla yelled: "Putin has never wronged me, has he?"

Chrupalla went on to spuriously deny that members of the Russian government—including Medvedev—had threatened to attack Germany with nuclear weapons. Later in the talk show, Chrupalla suggested that Poland was more dangerous to Germany than Russia. His narrative drew angry criticism from across the political landscape in Germany, with some government backbenchers even demanding Chrupalla should be tried for treason. It is now believed that Weidel will attempt to oust Chrupalla and become the sole leader of the party. (Source)

If Weidel can oust Chrupalla and marginalise the Neo-Nazis, she would lose some votes in East Germany but could profit on a national level in the end. It seems to me that Germany would respond more favourably to Weidel's Trumpian politics and focus on issues like migration, compared to the ideological orthodoxy of the likes of Chrupalla.

I fully understand old Fred this time, as he wants to stop the surge of AfD, but these young Ukrainians will stay in Poland, so their uncontrolled influx will increase the support rate for Polish right-wing parties. That support rate is already at an insane level, so the current Polish government is more than extremely likely to lose the parliamentary elections in 2027 due to their present coalition partners having lost their support, so they won't be able to get into the parliament in 2 years.

USA vs East Germany.
Much to AfD's annoyance, the CDU under Merz actually has much better ties with the Trump administration than they themselves, despite their ideological differences. The majority leader in the Federal Diet, Jens Spahn, is a personal friend of Rubio's.
