And most of these perpetrators have one thing in common: they are cowardly and sneaky. They attack people who are completely unprepared. Preferably women and elderly people who are unable to defend themselves properly, or at all, so that they don't run the risk of becoming victims themselves... They don't go out onto the street and shout, “I want to take on someone who thinks they're stronger than me, and then we'll fight it out.”

Targets of opportunity with no reason or motive.
They are doing it "just because".
As the explanation goes "they snapped", which... in a sense could make sense in and of itself if it happened once and only once.
However these individuals are well known repeat offenders. It isn't the first time they did it and it isn't something they do "regularly" as in once a year. But they do it regularly as in every day or once a week.
Like the local drunk who has a cell to his name. Except it is not the "goofy" village drunk, but a violent psycho who wounds, maims and kills.
"Guess he decided to escalate things today, huh?"
