A Colombian National Police GAULA Group Rescues Lawyer Kidnapped by ELN. Colombian special forces rescued lawyer Yennis Vanessa Salazar Zabaleta from ELN guerrillas in a daring jungle operation, authorities reported Friday.
The 29-year-old former municipal ombudsperson of Tamalameque was extracted unharmed from a remote area in the Catatumbo region of Norte de Santander on November 27, after nine months in captivity. Salazar Zabaleta was kidnapped on February 21 while traveling through the department of Cesar by the ELN's Camilo Torres Restrepo Front, which demanded 15 billion pesos (US$3.5 million) as ransom.
His family appealed to President Gustavo Petro for help through the ongoing peace talks with the guerrilla group, but no ransom was paid. The operation, dubbed Operation Thor, involved GAULA units of the National Police, Special Forces commandos, and Air Force support in a bloodless raid in which the kidnappers escaped. The incident underscores the ELN's persistent violence in the Catatumbo region amid the Colombian conflict, with more than 120 kidnappings reported this year, most attributed to the guerrilla group.
