I looked it up and it seems now that China rules bioscience papers too with their citations getting up and thus becoming more relevant. A few years ago they were unable to create their own MRNa vaccine then bought bioscience, of course German, and bam they rule bioscience research because Xi said so.
But nothing groundbreaking ever materialises from there.
I presume they just cross reference each other to get to the desired metrics here and impress the CCP.

Bioscience products come overwhelmingly from Western nations.
With bioscience they got access through clinical studies which are now predominantly performed on Chinese patients in Chinese hospitals. But products are still developed by Western companies.
Example new lung cancer drug developed through cooperation of the Broad institute and Bayer.
Collaboration between Broad Institute and Bayer leads to new treatment for a hard-to-treat type of lung cancer.
