Re: Canada, and Québec particularly. They were very close to independence thirty years ago. I actually agree with Chazman that we lack Canadians here to offer their own perspective about things.
Basically the possibility or likelihood of an independent Quebec is more remote by the day/month/year as their recent arrivals eventually getting the Canadian citizenship want to become and stay Canadian, not Quebecois.
Whatever you think of Quebec, their own identity and French heritage, they’re likely going to be swallowed up by their 350M English speaking neighbors.

The lack thereof indicates we largely are conservative and they are largely limp left or afraid conservatives.. Trudeau cut off the protesting Truckers bank accounts. This is what comes with quiet devolution into left wing police states.

On the Canadian gun law youtube videos..they don't seem interested in defending the place. It's not as though conservatives have vanished but they are disinterested.
They were a fearsome military. They probably are but beyond the volunteers its conscription.

I think the actual vote is in October. They currently need about 177K signatures on a petition for a referendum vote on secession.

Yeah, but overall car manufacturing/assembly is just 6% of the Canadian economy. Since the American Car Companies are lagging behind in EV and tech, maybe the Canadians are seeing the writing on the wall, that once the EV enter the market the American cars will mostly just cater to American wants. The cap of 49,000 units is probably there to help their car industry transition, who knows maybe theres a deal to be made to start making EV's in Canada for the North American market. I wouldnt be surprised if a Canadian firm starts from no where reselling chinese EV as "canadian made."

Well, the issue isn't so much about Chinese spy cars, it's about North American hemispherical defense. Canada is a key player. True, the American taxpayer picks up virtually the whole tab, but it requires Canadian cooperation and trust. Carny may have screwed the pooch with his China visit. We'll see how this goes, but I suspect it won't be good for Canadians, for a number of reasons.

Chinese spy cars versus? Japanese or American spy cars? All the same to most. Actually the issue the Americans try to spin is always hemispherical defense, thats like American imperialisms new walking stick now. A BYD on the road wont exactly threaten NORAD. A president acting up and talking about taking part of Canada though has a more direct impact in Canada telling the US to eff off, dont you think? The erosion in the Alliance has come when Trump came in, not because of the Chinese.
The manufacture of origin includes parts. Even via Thailand as a proxy is made in China. Can't assemble in Canada and call it Canadian for the US market.

Trump has certainly pushed Canada's buttons, no doubt. The erosion however comes from Canada's HARD turn to the woke, net zero left. Canada has changed. 25% of it population has been replaced by foreign born people who are more than happy to continue voting for "free" benefits. It's a self inflicted death spiral. Sadly, Canada is on the verge of becoming a failed State. If Alberta and SK bolt, Canada is fvcked, since that's where a lot to the cash comes from to support their welfare state. I suppose China could come in a "save" them with as Carny calls it, his new strategic partnership. That would be a big problem for the US. Actually, my advice to him is, work things out with the US. Canada holds zero cards - really with either the US or China. They've put themselves in that position over the past 10 years, they just don't like that Trump is not shy about ruthlessly calling them out.
Personally, I would never want to see Canada as a 51st State. They are just too far gone with too many unfunded liabilities. I would trade Alberta for Minnesota though. Seriously, I'd rather see them fix themselves. I don't think that's in the cards however, unless Trump becomes Canada's Prime Minister.
Carny is a complete disaster for Canada.
