After three years of waiting, PAF finally awarded Embraer to supply six Super Tucanos. For Horizon 2, PAF wants additional 18 Super Tucanos.

Philippine Air Force selects Super Tucano

    Published: November 30th, 2017

Embraer announced today, November 30, that the Philippines has placed a firm order for six A-29 Super Tucano light attack and advanced training aircraft. The Philippine Air Force (PAF) will use the aircraft for missions including close air support, light attack, surveillance, air-to-air interception, and counter-insurgency.

According to the Brazilian manufacturer the A-29 was chosen after a “comprehensive public bidding process participated by several manufacturers from around the globe”. The Super Tucano was selected as part of the PAF’s ongoing modernisation plan. The six aircraft will be delivered beginning in 2019 and will be operated by the 15th Strike Wing.

“We are honored to be selected by the Philippine Air Force, our second operator in the Asia Pacific region, and with the confidence expressed by our customer”, said Jackson Schneider, president and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “The Super Tucano is the best light attack aircraft in the market and we are confident that it will accomplish with excellence the missions it was selected for”.

To date, the Super Tucano has been selected by 14 air forces worldwide.

On October 25, Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and partner Embraer secured an order for six more A-29s for delivery to Afghanistan. The deal was placed via the US Air Force’s A-29 Afghanistan Program. Production of the six additional Super Tucanos was due to start immediately in Jacksonville, Florida, and will bring the Afghan Air Force fleet to 25 aircraft, with one aircraft having been lost in an accident in the US prior to delivery.

Embraer announced the sale of six A-29s to a different, undisclosed customer on October 16. Deliveries under this order will be completed in 2018. At the time, it was rumoured that this deal was for the Philippines, but the company denied that this was the case.

The AFP Modernization Program has four Horizons. Currently this is the last year for Horizon 1, and Horizon 2 will start by next year, 2018 until 2020. Under Horizon 2 the AFP are planning to buy MRFs, light tanks, additional Super Tucanos, attack helicopters, and other essential equipment. Big ticket items such as submarines, additional frigates and corvettes, mine sweepers, Main Battle Tanks etc will start by Horizon 3. Hopefully all of these plans will materialize under president Duterte.

These are some of the equipment procured under Horizon One (2013-2017). Supposedly, Horizon 1 should had begin in 2004, but due to corruption, lack of political will, and ineptitude of the previous admins, the plans were keep on extending and extending until President Aquino decided to modernize the AFP at full blast without delays. I hope it answered your question sir thank you.

All of these are already delivered and waiting to be delivered.

Other acquisitions are: 1000+ Korean KIA KM-240 trucks, RPG-7s from Bulgaria and Russia, Force Protection Equipment like new kevlar helmets, body armor, boots, new digital uniform (CAMOPAT), etc, drones, NVGs, sidearms, and recently the Super Tucano. Others i forgot to mention yet.

There are projects too that did not materialize like the Shore Based Anti Ship Missile Sytems (SBSMS), LRPA (Long Range Patrol Aircraft), and the wasted plan to procure two Maestrale class frigates from Italy.
