Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has started to build a 2,600-ton frigate for the Philippine Navy.

The company held a ceremony on May 1 to celebrate the start of construction at its headquarters in Ulsan with the participation of HHI president Kang Hwan-koo; Delfin Lorenzana, secretary of the Department of National Defense of the Philippines; De Vera Elefante, undersecretary of the Department of National Defense of the Philippines; and Robert Empedrad, head of the Philippine Navy.

The frigate is a multi-purpose battleship with a length of 107 meters and a width of 12 meters. It is the first of the two naval escorts that HHI will build for the Philippine Department of Defense. The company received the order in October 2016.

The escort flaunts a speed of 25 knots (46 km/h) with a cruising range of more than 4,500 nautical miles and can carry out patrolling missions in the open sea. It is designed to have excellent operational performance in rough sea conditions such as typhoons and tropical climate.

The frigate will be loaded with 76mm guns, ship-to-air missiles, torpedoes, helicopters and other weapons systems that enable it to carry out anti-aircraft and anti-submarine operations.

HHI will complete the first ship in May next year and deliver it to the Philippine Department of National Defense in the second half of 2020. The company will start the construction of the second frigate in September this year and deliver it in the first half of 2021.

Hyundai Heavy Industries has built the main naval vessels of the Korean Navy, including aegis ships, KDX-II destroyers, helicopters, frigates and submarines. It built the first Korean naval vessel "Ulsan" in December 1980. The company have also won many orders from overseas countries including the Philippines, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Venezuela.

This is not yet the final design. Recently there are many controversial alterations in the specs by HHI and some Politikos with selfish personal interests. Personally I don't know if im happy or sad with these new "neutered" frigates.

^^ I am on the side of sacked Vice Admiral Mercado, who tried to have HHI comply with the original contract which stipulated a Thales combat system which is a combat proven system and in use by many navies. They then supplanted it with a different system only used by ROK I believe and not as capable i.e. cheaper.

I am bemused how the Philippines has hung Mercado out to dry for standing up and trying to get the best result for the PI Navy and seem to be willing to accept less capable ships than originally contracted. The PI needs to demand what it ordered, not what HHI decides to foist off onto PI.

Just my 2/- worth;)

Jordan donates 2 attack helicopters

The Philippines has accepted Jordan’s donation of two refurbished Cobra attack helicopters, President Rodrigo Duterte said.

The President, in a speech during the 120th anniversary of the Philippine Navy on Tuesday, said National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr., who is now in the Jordanian capital, Amman, personally worked on the donation.

The Philippines will spend for the refurbishing of the multimillion-dollar, single-engined Cobras, according to the popular defense website MaxDefense.

The original plan was four. I don't really know the exact reason why Jordan reduced it to two donations. Currently our Dept. of Nat'l Defense are negotiating for four cobras. This is a DREAM come true for PAF because they always wanted the Cobra since the 90s. There is a plan to buy 24 attack helicopters for Horizon 2 modernization program. Jordan will also donate 60 M113 APCs which will boost are current 200+ M113s in our inventory.

PHILIPPINE ARMY NEGOTIATES TO ACQUIRE USED K136 KOORYONG MLRS FROM SOUTH KOREA
The Philippine Army (PA) has always been longing to have Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) in its inventory, as it found such system to be good in providing large amounts of projectiles fired at the same time at a specific area. Such concentration of firepower can only be achieved by either large numbers of gun-based artillery systems firing together.
