The Finnish Air Force's live-fly air exercise Protective Fence 25 is in full swing. The Swedish Air Force participates in the exercise with three detachments of JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets. The Gripen detachments operating from Oulu airport and Kallax Air Base, Sweden, are integrated into Finland’s air defence on the “blue” side of the exercise. Meanwhile, the Gripen detachment deployed to Rissala Air Base, Finland, simulates the adversary on the “red” side together with Finnish F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets and Hawk jet trainers.
The exercise strengthens Finnish-Swedish cooperation on aircraft cross-servicing, which includes e.g. refuelling the other nation's fighter jets. At Kokkkola-Pietarsaari airport, Karelia Air Wing’s active-duty personnel and reservists have hot-pit refuelled both Finnish F/A-18s and Swedish Gripens. Finnish and Swedish maintainers have familiarised themselves with each other’s fighter jets also at other bases.
Aircraft cross-servicing is an important element of NATO’s Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concept that aims to ensure that different nations’ fighter jets can operate as smoothly as possible from each other’s air bases. The better the mechanics of NATO member nations’ air forces know each other’s fighter jets, the easier it is to employ Allied airpower in a mobile and flexible way in times of conflict or war.
