Santa’s helpers will have to wear a seatbelt on the floats at
Christchurch’s Santa Parade.
The requirement, mentioned by mayor Phil Mauger in a recent council meeting, has been seen by some people as an “absurd” and “ridiculous” move.
Seatbelts and safety bars on floats were added where needed, including on the Santa float where the elves would need to wear seatbelts.
The decision came after recommendations in a health and safety audit.

City councillor Aaron Keown said it’s burning resources for no real gain.
“In the past, none of the floats I can think of required a seatbelt.
“Technically it is the law once it’s in a public space, but it seemed over the top and a bit pointless.”
“What's the height of a float that triggers a seatbelt or if you're sitting one feet off the ground doing two kilometres an hour, do you still got to have a seatbelt?”
“I think New Zealand has gone too far. We have increased our spend on health and safety by billions and not saved any lives.“
City councillor Tim Scandrett said it was an irony that seatbelts were installed on floats when Metro buses had no seatbelts.
“It seems absurd that you would need a seatbelt on a float, which is travelling at most four kilometres an hour. You are putting buses for people to get to the event and there are no seatbelts on the buses.”
“Most of the time you are actually standing still because different floats move at different speeds.”
He said the organisers did a great work on [refurbishing] the floats but they could have put the money to a better use.
“It is truly ridiculous.”

Christchurch Santa parade director Jason Reekes said it was Safe and Sound Health and Safety that made the recommendation.
“They came and did an audit on our floats. They recommended seat belts and all sorts of safety bars things being installed on the floats.
“Once a company like Safe and Sound Health and Safety brought it to your attention and if you don't do anything about it, you get in trouble if something happens.”
He said seatbelts and safety bars were donated to the organisers.
“Luckily, it cost us nothing because we had a seatbelt company [Mike Fiddymont from Fiddymont] donate all the seatbelts for us out of sympathy, and our sponsor VIP Frames and Trusses made all the safety bars for us.”
He said most people who heard about seatbelts on floats thought it was ridiculous.
The Christmas Show Parade will be held at the Canterbury Agricultural Park on Sunday.
70 floats will go around a 2.2km route from 2pm on Sunday.
