Did anybody else know this?, first time I have ever heard of it or seen it


Army Regulation 670-1 states, "the American flag patch is to be worn, right or left shoulder, so that "the star field faces forward, or to the flag's own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer's right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward."
 
Yes I believe this to be accurate and have read this before.

Here is a photo of a patch worn in reverse
Not all military Flag Patches are reversed, only those worn on the right shoulder. The reason has to do with proper display of the flag. The blue field of stars should always be toward the front.

It is my understanding that the purpose is to always have the flag appear as if it was advancing toward the enemy as in the picture below depicting a scene from the battle of Ball's Bluff
