Personally, I think step one is Denmark allowing Greenland independence. Greenlanders may not want to be Americans, but it seems they definitely don't want to be Danish. Denmark also needs a way to say, "Welp, the Greenlanders have spoken, it's out of or hands now".
Watched them interview a Saami = Finish reindeer herder.

The way I see it - they are pragmatic and know that a 60k nation without a large industrial base or high tech companies won't be able to pay for it all, so they stick with Denmark. Additionally, if they become independent now, they will have an even weaker defense than with Denmark/EU/NATO and what kind of a message will that send to Trump? That they are ripe for picking.
They are not stupid and as they don't want to be Americans, they see Denmark as the lesser evil.

Unforseen consequence from all of this might be EU federalization. With the current leaders on top (that Trump and many others dislike). It's just simply much harder to pick on a federation of 500 million than a kingdom of 5.

Not a fan of federal Europe, but in this situation that might unfortunately be among the pragmatic solutions like being a part of Denmark is for Greenland.

It was very well protected by NATO I was there. The divisive talk was only not that present back then and everybody knew where it was coming from - fringe leftists.

Thats stupid. It was stated from the beginning that the mission would be over today...or...yesterday evening. Can be read on several outlets articles from Jan 15th....
