On 2 August 2018, more than 200 Afghan officer cadets became the latest cohort to graduate from the Afghan National Army Officer Academy.

After 54 weeks of training the cadets left the Academy to refine their trade skills and become Platoon Commanders in the Afghan National Army, where they will lead soldiers on combat operations.

For the first time in the curriculum, female cadets conducted night training. Since the academy’s inauguration in 2014, over 3,300 officer cadets have graduated including 150 females.

Australian military personnel played a key role in the development of the new military leaders, through the mentoring and advising of Afghan instructors within the academy to ensure a best practice standard of training and performance.

Around 100 Australian Defence Force personnel are based at the Marshal Fahim National Defense University, where they support the development of Afghan instructors at three of Afghanistan’s main military academies. They join around 200 other Australian Defence Force personnel deployed on Operation Highroad as part of the Australian commitment to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission.

Resolute Support’s purpose is to help the Afghan security forces and institutions develop the capacity to defend Afghanistan and protect its citizens in a sustainable manner.
