One of the sergeants to serve at Archangel was John Robert Cowan Kelly of Glen Innes.
In June 1918, Kelly was detached for special duty with the Imperial Army and transferred to ‘Elope’
Force. He embarked from Newcastle aboard the ‘City of Marseilles’ on 16 June, 1918, and arrived
in Murmansk on 23 June. He was appointed sergeant of the School of Archangel Musketry on 11
November, 1918. After spending a year with ‘Elope Force’ in North Russia, Kelly was evacuated
from Archangel to England on 17 June, 1919. John Robert Cowan Kelly returned to Australia
aboard ‘Ajana’ on 10 October 1919 and was discharged on 9 December 1919.
He kept a diary during his service in northern Russia and I will post some pages and pictures from it here.

The wreck of HMS L55 in the Soviet dry dock at Kronshtadt after salvage in 1928. The boat was sunk in a WWI minefield after a failed attack on the Bolshevik destroyers Azard and Gavriil prompted a gun fight, 9 June 1919. She would serve the Soviets from 1931-1950.

I hope the local politbureau notworthy; won't object to taking up BravoZulus' previous thread. It's just an amazing story imho, so I wanted to share more details of the story, I stole on FB.

Submarine L55 in the dock at the Kronstadt Marine Plant in 1928
HMS L55 was a British L class submarine built by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Govan, Clyde. She was laid down on 21 September 1917 and was commissioned on 19 December 1918.
In 1919, the L55 operating in the intervention against Soviet Russia and on June 4 was sunk in battle with the destroyers Azard and Gavriil. In 1926, the submarine was discovered, in 1928 it was raised and by 1931 it was repaired and put into operation of the Soviet Navy under the same name (Л-55 in Russian spelling). In 1939 she was transferred to a training submarine. During the war it was used as a charging station for other submarines.
After raised the submarine, the bodies of 38 crew members were discovered, who were sent to England. Prior to this, the British press denied the victims of the sinking of the submarine.
P.S. The rise of the L55 was carried out by the salvage ship Kommuna, operating in the Russian fleet from 1915 to the present.

I have posted the story of L55 with photos and documents somewhere but can't find it now.
Here are some more pictures from my computer.
