Photos Aussies and Kiwi's in Vietnam

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. October 1971. An historic game for all sports loving Australian soldiers was this volleyball game at Nui Dat, home of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF). After more than five years of volleyball competition, it was the last grand final the Task Force would see before the withdrawal of Australian forces. The 1st Australian Psychological Operations Unit won the final against 106 Field Workshops.

Dec 1970. 1736091 Private (Pte) Denis Blakey of Alderley, Qld, finds himself part of a duet when Lorrae Desmond brought the microphone to him during her show at the Luscombe Bowl in Nui Dat. Lorrae Desmond was the star of the show which spent two weeks entertaining at Australian and American bases in the war zone. Pte Blakey is serving with the 1st Ordnance Field Park.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. 1968-10. A touch football game between A and D Companies of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), was held at the battalion's base camp at Nui Dat. The match ended in a 1-all draw. 1970. A cartoon painted on a sheet of canvas in front of a tent at Nui Dat, South Vietnam, commenting on living conditions. A caricature rent collector is shown asking, "Wonder when they're gonna pull these bloody slums down!". The photograph was taken by 1201940 Signaller Robert Barclay 'Scotty' Wilson, of 104 Signal Squadron, who was based at Nui Dat during his first tour of duty in Vietnam. Robert Wilson died on 16 July 1971, on his second tour of duty, following injuries received in an accident.
