William WOODS. Private 39040, 2nd The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment
Born 11 April 1894 to William John and Elsie Woods, nee McFadden of Black Abbey, Grey Abbey, Co. Down.
Died in France 04 July 1918 aged 24 years old.
A war gratuity was granted to his mother 16 August 1919.
At rest in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.
He is also commemorated on a family memorial at Kircubbin Presbyterian Churchyard, Ards Peninsula, County Down, Northern Ireland.

Enlisted 13 March 1899 aged 19 years and was posted to Loyal North Lancashire Regiment
and was on home duties
06 September 1901 he was posted with his regiment to South Africe to fight in the Boer War and left South Africa 04 April 1902 for Gibraltar, returning to UK 19 February 1904. On the 29 April 1912 he was discharged to Army Reserve Sec B on termination of his first period of engagement. Total service 12 years.
He re-enlistment and was residing with his parents at Blackabbey, Greyabbey, County Down, occupation, farmer.
Enlisted 11 December 1915 and posted to 19th Training Reserve
29 January 1917 transferred to 11th Training Reserve
23 December 1915 he was posted Bradford to join the Army Service Corps as Private 161052
From the 29th January 1917 to 19 July 1917 he was transferred to 11th Training Reserve Battalion.
The 20th July 1917 he was transferred to the 2nd Loyal North Lancashire Regiment for overseas duties.
He along with his regiment embarked for Egypt H.T. (Hired Transport) Saxon disembarking at Alexandria 04 August 1917
On the 18 May 1918 the regiment embarked from Port Said bound for France. The 27 May 1918 the regiment disembarked at Marseille, France
He was admitted into a hospital (may have been No 33. Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne) suffering from sandfly fever 05 August 1917, discharged to duty 03 September 1917
REPORT ON ILLNESS and DEATH OF No 39040 Pte Woods, W. 2nd N.Lan.R.
This man was taken ill 19-6-18 apparently with influenza, which gradually became worse. He was first admitted to 103 Field Ambulance 27-6-18 and transferred to this hospital the same day. On admission, his temperature was 104.8 and remained high throughout his illness. He was cyanosed very dyspnoea and had labial herpes. The lung showed signs of intense bronchitis. During the following days he became steadily worse and showed definite signs of broncho-pneumonia. He died 8.40 a.m. 4-7-18, the cause of death being broncho-pneumonia (probably due to the influenza bacillus, through this has not yet been definitely proved bacteriologically ).
It was signed by a Lt Colonel from the hospital he was in.
