William Sidney HALDANE

Colonel, William Sidney HALDANE. Deputy Commissariat General of Ordnance who died suddenly at Malta 12th July 1891 aged 54 years. He was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth and in 1851 aged 13 was living with his parents and siblings at 55 Mount Street, Devonport Devonshire.
At rest in Ta Braxia Cemetery, Malta.

From the 10th January 1856 to 12 February 1870, at Curragh he was Lieutenant, Deputy assistant superintendent of stores

10th January 1856 is the date of his first commission (probably as Clerk, but this need confirming). In 1861 the Military Store Department was re-organised and Haldane was one of those assigned to it as Deputy Assistant Superintendent of Stores (D.A.S.S.) with a commission dated of 1 April 1861 (along with a number of others). From Harts Annual Army List it is possible to trace his movements ; shown as being at Aldershot (1862, 1863), then New Zealand (1864-1867), King William Town (1868), Tower (1869), Curragh (1870).

In 1870 the Military Store Department was replaced by the Control Department, with Transport & Supply Sub Department and Pay Sub Department. Many of those that had been in the Military Store Department transferred to one of these sub departments, Haldane to Supply & Transport Sub Department, with the new rank of Assistant Commissary ranking with Lieutenant (12th Feb 1870).

In 1880 he a restructure, this time Haldane transferred to Ordnance Store Department, as Assistant Commissary General of Ordnance, in 1885 same rank but Hon. Lieutenant Colonel. Appointed Deputy Commissary General of Ordnance, with Hon. rank of Colonel, 24 August 1890. [/QUOTE]
