The Staffordshire Encyclopedia:

The Major General William Reid MARTIN visiting Farley Hall, Farley was accidentally shot dead on shooting party in Gibridding Wood on 31st December 1892.

The Cheadle Herald dated 7 March 1893
has a different version of how he died.

Sudden death whilst out shooting with a party of gentlemen who were being entertained by Mr Bill. M.P. of Farley Hall on Sat last. General Martin of London fell down and suddenly expired. An inquest has been held and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased died from natural causes - probably syncope.
He was Major General in the Indian Staff Corps

He was the husband of Agnes Rebekah Fitzherbert on whom he married on the 16th Oct 1867
