Born 28 May 1876 at Full Sutton, East Yorkshire to Edmund Mason and Martha Thomasina Garwood.
1881 with his parents and siblings at Heworth, Yorkshire.
1891 with his parents and siblings at 02 Studley Street, Clifton, Yorkshire, occupation age 13, gardners help.
31 January 1896 enlisted into the Royal Marine Artillery.
He married Minnie Parlett, April 1902 at Portsmouth, Hampshire.
Some notes from his service record
Enlisted as Private 5800 on the 31 January 1896 at York and posted the same day to Marine Depot, Deal, Kent.
Her served on several ships and he went up through the ranks to Sergeant.
He joined to following ships.
HMS Sans Pareil 20 April 1897 to 05 May 1899, to shore.
HMS Camperdown 1885, 01 January 1900 to 14 February 1902, to shore.
HMS Albemarle 12 November 1903 to 29 January 1906, to shore.
HMS Majestic 12 October 1909 to 08 January 1908.
His last ship was HMS Bacchante 18 February 1908 to his fatal gunshot injury on board this ship 11 April 1910 as Sergeant.
His death
Died in Bighi Naval Hospital, Kalkara, Malta 11 April 1910 of a bullet wound of his abdomen whilst endeavouring to obtain a revolver from the custody of a gunner of the Royal Marine Artillery when the weapon discharged through mishap or design.
He was laid to rest on the morning 12 at Bighi Naval Cemetery, Malta.
