Born 13 October 1886 to James and Mary Melville, nee Gordon at, Co. Down, Ireland.
Irish 1901 census. Residing with his mother at 07 William Street, Ballycross, County Down, Ireland.
09 June 1910 he married Sarah Campbell at Ballyrainey Church, County Down, Ireland.
1911 with his wife Sarah, nee Campbell at the home of his in-laws Hugh and Sarah Campbell, at 03 Carryreagh, near Donaghadee, County Down, Ireland.
1916 his mother, Elizabeth Melville, was residing at William Street, Donaghadee, Co. Down.
Killed in action in France on the first day of the Battle of the Somme July 1916 age 30 years.
A war gratuity was granted to guardian James Campbell 06 December 1917, revised to same person, 24 October 1919.
His name was given as William John Melville. (war gratuity)
Commemorated on a family memorial in Donaghadee Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland also on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
