William John ROGAN. Gunner 275546, B Battery, 19th Fire Command, Royal Garrison Artillery died 10th January 1919 aged 47. He was the son of Joseph and Isabella. He is at rest in St Malachy's Churchyard, Hillsborough, County Down, Northern Ireland.
Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up on the 24th August 1914 aged 39 and was employed as a Labourer. He had previously served with the Mountain Artillery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was posted to 15th Company, Royal Garrison Artillery the same day and on the 15th January 1915 he was posted to 20th Siege Company, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was received a gun shot wound to his back which was not sever. He was treated at 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen and was discharged , fit for duty on the 26th August 1917 to Base Depot to await deployment to his unit. On the 24th October 1917 he was sent back to England as being unfit for duty in France and he was at No 2 Depot, Royal Garrison Artillery attached as Gunner, R.G.A., Gosport, and on the 29th Jan18 he was posted from 37 Company R.G.A, as Gunner to 24th Company, R.G.A,, Portsmouth. His military conduct was not good, he had many O.C. Orders, and District Court Martials all drink related in one way or another. He sentences ranged from 21 days to 28 days detention in his unit guardroom.
His brother Arthur of 79 Utility Street Belfast and later of 41 Canal Street, Lisburn, County Down was his next of kin. While on a visit to his brother, Arthur, at 41 Canal Street, Lisburn he retired to bed in the evening, the following morning 9th January 1919 his brother could not wake him up. The police were called and a doctor. It appeared that he died of Syncope, consequent on failure of the actions of a week heart may be through him having been wounded.
