William Herbert CLEMERSON. Pilot Officer, Pilot 81027, 61 Squadron, Royal Air Force (VR), at RAF Hemswell, Lincolnshire. He was pilot and part of a crew of four of Handley Page Bomber X2979 on air operation to bomb the industrial town of Merseburg, Germany. On approach to the RAF Hemswell and due to fog covering his and other bases in the area and also suffering technical difficulties contact was made with their base for a fix. It appears whilst trying to an emergency landing the aircraft crashed at Sporle, Norfolk at 2.45 hrs 17 October 1940, probably due to low fuel, all the crew perished. William was aged 25 years, son of Stanley and Amelia Clemerson, nee Herbert of Bamford, Nottinghamshire.
