William Charles Coleman GELL

Extended Description
Air Vice Marshall, William Charles Coleman GELL CB., DSO and Bar,/ MC., DL, Born 10th July 1888 died 16th May 1969. (In uniform)

When the author joined the army in 1967 as you know, you had to have references. As a young lad aged 10 and upwards I used to help out on his son's farm at Appleridge, Hystfield, Gloucestershire. His son, Roy was pleased that I had joined up, but not with the RAF. He asked his father on my behalf and a few days later William, himself gave the reference to me at the farm. At the depot in Exeter I can always remember a sergeant looking through my papers and asking me how I got a reference from this person. My reply was quite simple, I worked for him. He was a great person and when I was home on leave I always had to go and see him. He would always ask how I was getting on, and have general chit chat.
