Wilfred CATHERALL. Acting Lance Corporal 87594, Machine Gun Corps died 26th February 1919 aged 21 while on leave from Germany Son of William and Martha Cathcrall, of Red Lion, Bagillt, Flintshire. At rest in St Mary's Churchyard, Bagillt, Flintshire. (CWGC have Cathcrall and private)
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined up on the 30 December 1916 aged 18 and 2 months. Posted to the South Wales Borderers as Private 29020, transferred to the Machine Gun Corps as Private 87594 on the 6th March 1917 and posted to France on the 14th May 1917. On the 4th June 1917 he was transferred to 87th Coy, Machine Gun Corps. Promoted to Lance Corporal, unpaid on the 10th September 1918. He died at his home, The Red Lion, Bagillt, the very day he was due to return to his unit from leave. He died of cyanotic influenza pneumonia. He died with the rank of A/Lance Corporal.
