Private S/12437 David ALLISON. 8/10th Gordon Highlanders died 25 March 1918. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France

Leading Seaman, Tynside Z/6335 William ARMSTRONG. Royal Naval (VR) Drake Battalion, Royal Navy Division died 24 April 1917. At rest in St. Catherine British Cemetery, France

Lance Corporal 21974 David BAXTER. 8th Border Regiment died 28 August 1916 aged 26. Son of John and Mary Ann Baxter, of Hethersgill. At rest in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

Private 201863 WillieWAUGH. 1st Border Regiment died 19 April 1918 aged 22. Son of Isaac and Jane Waugh, of Mount House, Blackford, Carlisle. At rest in Ebblinghem Military Cemetery, Nord France.


1939 – 1945

Petty Officer, Telegraphist D/JX136385 Edward Curl CARLTON DSM, Mentioned in Despatches Royal Navy, HM Submarine Spearfish, Royal Navy died at sea 2 August 1940 aged 24. Son of Mark and Alice Carlton, of Westlinton, Cumberland. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

HMS Spearfish (Lt.Cdr. John Hay Forbes, DSO, RN) sailed from Rosyth on 31 July 1940. The next day she was hit by 1 torpedo from the German submarine U-34 and sank about 130 nautical miles north-east of Aberdeen, Scotland in position 58º07'N, 01º32'E. U-34 was returning from her last patrol as a combat boat. She had only one torpedo remaining after a succesful patrol (already 4 ships sunk). The U-boat picked up the sole survivor from HMS Spearfish.

Sergeant 1594825 John FAWKES. 50th Squadron, Royal Air Force died 29 August 1944. Son of Robert Carruthers Fawkes and Thomasina Fawkes, of Westlinton, Cumberland. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

Lance Corporal George HOLLIDAY. King’s Dragoon Guards, is not listed with the CWGC. There are only two George Holliday’s the following may be him -
Guardsman 2653986 George HOLLIDAY. 3rd Coldstream Guards died 30 July 1945 aged 34. Son of John William and Margaret Holliday, of Ushaw Moor, Durham. At rest in Ushaw Moor Cemetery, Durham.
