War Memorial. WW2 located in St Mary's Church, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
GWELL ANGAU NA GWARTH
("Gwell Angau Na Gwarth" (Rather Death than Dishonour) was composed by Lady Llanover, the wife of the Lord-Lieutenant in 1864.)
In memory of the following men of the staff
who fell in the Great War - 1914 to 1918

William Ernest EVANS. Lance Corporal 6490, 2nd Shropshire Light Infantry. Died on the 25th April 1915. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Arthur HILL. Private 17209, 2nd Grenadier Guards died 19th October 1915. At rest in Quatre-Vents Military Cemetery, Estree-Cauchy, France.

Arthur Allan HAWKER. Lance Corporal 20996, 1 Company, 2nd Grenadier Guards died 9th September 1918 aged 25. Son of Arthur and Rhoda Hawker, of Hill Court Gardens, Ross-on-Wye. At rest in Vaulx Hill Cemetery, France.

Sydney ROLLINGS. Gloucestershire Regiment. (Not listed with the CWGC as losing his life serving while serving with the stated regiment.
It may be the following. Private 39876, Sydney ROLLINGS, 5th South Wales Borderers, formerly 4655, Monmouthshire Regiment, killed in action 12th June 1918. Native of Knighton, Radnorshire Husband of Annie of 257, Prince's Road, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent. Staffordshire. At rest in Marfaux British Cemetery,

John Brinley WILLIAMS. Sergeant 1132921, 38 Squadron, Royal Air Force (VR) killed between 3rd and 4th November 1942, aged 27. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli T. Williams, of Phillipstown, New Tredegar, Monmouthshire, husband of Annie Rosina Williams, of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
