In 2002, the venerable USS Ohio SSBN 726, the first of its class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines was slated for retirement. The US Navy decided instead to convert her and three of her sister ships to be able to carry conventional missiles and extend their service lives. After a 36 month refueling and overhaul, OHIO, now designated SSGN 726 was put back into service. Another "first" for OHIO occurred in 2011 when LT Britta Christianson was assigned to the boat as its Supply Officer, the first women to quality for service aboard a US Navy submarine.
