USS Escolar SS 294 by George Bieda

This is a new profile drawing by noted naval and aviation artist George Bieda. It depicts the USS Escolar SS 294, one of many Balao Class diesel submarines built during WW II, as she appeared in 1944. Hers is a tragic story. She was sunk on her first cruise while on patrol in the Yellow Sea on 17 October 1944, with all hands lost. Official records can only speculate that she was sunk either by a mine or by enemy naval aircraft.
