Ulster Security Forces Memorial, Comber, Northern Ireland

Extended Description
To the glory of God and in memory of those members of the Ulster Security Forces from Comber and District who gave their lives in the defence of their country. Erected 1998

Robert Roy SMYTH, Private 24489077, Ulster Defence Regiment killed on active service with the Operations Platoon, 3rd Ulster Defence Regiment 6th January 1980 aged 18. He was one of a section of four in the lead vehicle on a two vehicle patrol near Castlewellan, County Down. On their return to Ballykinlar Camp their vehicle was blown up by a 600lb home made land mine. He and private Jim Cochran were trapped under water underneath their vehicle in the crater which was filling up with water from a broken water main caused by the explosion. Three had died at the scene, two from fractured skulls and one may have drowned. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.


MONTGOMERY Stuart John, Royal Ulster Constabulary, murdered by terrorists 7th September 1981 aged 18 years and 6 months. He was fatally injured on mobile patrol when a terrorist landmine exploded in County Tyrone.
Pass not this stone in sorrow but in pride and may you live as nobly as he died.
He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

Constable Samuel Todd, Royal Ulster Constabulary. Died 15 October 1990, aged 40. Constable Todd died two days after being shot while sitting in a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) civilianised dog van, at security barriers, High Street, Belfast. He was one of two dog handlers, the other was wounded but survived. The gun used by the IRA gunman had been taken from Michael Stone after his atack at Milltown Cemetery (16 Mar 88). The same gun also killed Roy Butler (2 Aug 1988, UDR). Samuel Todd was married with 2 children.

Sergeant Stephen Gillespie, Royal Ulster Constabulary.
Died 2 May 1991,aged 31 Killed by terrorists firing a rocket- propelled grenade (RPG) at his armored Land Rover in which he was on mobile patrol on the 1st May 1991 in Mica Street, Belfast, along with two other policemen who were injured, but survived. Sgt Gillespie died of his wounds the following day in hospital.

Sergeant Stephen Alexander N. Fyfe, 28 Died 4 November 1983 aged 28. He was fatally injured by a terrorist bomb which was hidden in the ceiling of a classroom at the Ulster Polytechnic, Jordanstown, County Antrim while attending a lecture on duty . The bomb was put there by the IRA.

This memorial is in the Garden of Remembrance , The Square, Comber, which has been designated a sacred space.
