A triple murderer who gunned down his police officer father and a married couple almost 20 years ago has died after taking ill in Maghaberry Prison.
Portadown man Mark Maginnis (40) died in hospital on Monday morning after being transferred from Maghaberry on Sunday afternoon.

Maginnis was jailed for life in 1992 after he was convicted of the murder of his 47-year-old father, RUC Constable Alfred Maginnis, and the murders of his lover Sandra Brown (29) and her husband Jeffrey (30) on April 30, 1991.
The murderer, who was 20 at the time of the killings, shot all three at close range with his father’s police-issue revolver.
He killed his father at the family’s home at Five Acres in Portadown before driving a short distance to shoot the Browns in their house in Kensington Park.
After the murders Maginnis returned to his family home to reload the gun and collect money before driving to Larne, where he was later arrested after a high-speed car chase
During his trial the court was told that he had carried out the murders because he had heard from his father that his lover Mrs Brown had made an offensive remark about him.
He got into a row with his father before shooting him in the chest. As his father lay injured on the ground asking for a doctor he shot him in the head.
At his trial a QC described him as being “absolutely deranged” and said that when he was aged just 16 he had pointed a shotgun at his mother and threatened to “blow her away”.

What happened to him afterwards, did happen during the troubles in Northern Ireland, thankfully not a lot.

The following is a short extract from an article on face book (Operation Banner) His body was “surrounded by claymore mines. The body itself is booby-trapped to explode if moved. He also has a huge 500lb bomb attached to him, in 6 milk churns, with command wires leading across the border to a farmhouse. Any attempt to approach him will blow his corpse to pieces along with anyone attempting to retrieve him. He will have to lie there, dead, covered in blood and mud, naked except for his pants and on display for all to see, until the explosives are defused by the Bomb Squad”.

Extract from Issue 12, The Troubles.

20 April 1972 UDR man was executed. Relatives claimed he was tortured.
The kidnapped UDR man James Elliott’s body was discovered he had been shot through the back of his head and back. His body was surrounded by a minefield of six claymore devices and a huge 500ib bomb only feet from the body. His injuries were, nose and jaws had been broken and he had been shot several times. It was believed he had been tortured.

A new investigation is to be carried out into the fatal shooting of a UDR soldier during a training exercise near Enniskillen almost 40 years ago.
The fresh inquest into the shooting has been ordered by Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, after his family raised concerns about the open verdict delivered at the original hearing.
The 29-year-old father of four was hit with a live bullet on a firing range at Letterbreen during an exercise that was only supposed to involve blank cartridges. Warrant Officer Adamson was playing the role of an enemy target when he was shot during the exercise in April 1972. An initial investigation found that live bullets had somehow got mixed in with the blank cartridges that were to be used.

Mr. Adamson, a military instructor at the range, was one of five full-time members of the UDR acting as the "enemy" during a training exercise in April 1972. According to a report at the time soldiers taking part had been issued with a magazine loaded with blank bullets and, because of the security situation and the threat of IRA attack, a second magazine loaded with live ammunition.

The then 19-year-old McLuckie apparently loaded the magazine of live bullets into his rifle by mistake. As Mr. Adamson lay on the ground in a firing position less than 100 yards away, the teenage soldier fired a single shot. The bullet struck Mr. Adamson in the arm, shattering his wrist. It then ricocheted down through his lung, liver and kidneys before lodging in his hip. He was given First Aid at the scene before being rushed by ambulance to the Erne Hospital where he had a blood transfusion before being flown by army helicopter to Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast. His left hand was amputated and right kidney removed and he was transferred to the intensive care unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He died from his injuries two weeks after the shooting.

Mr. Adamson was originally from Yorkshire and it was while serving with the regular army in Fermanagh that he met Patricia Gillen, from Enniskillen. The couple married and had four children.

Mr H Henry Age 52 21 April 1987 - Magherafelt (Ballymilligan Road) - Married with 6 children - Building foreman Shot by the PIRA at his home outside Magherafelt. He was watching television when there was a knock at the front door. He opened the door and a man told him we want, ‘We want the keys of your car.’ When he refused, the man produced a hand gun. He pushed the man away and there was a struggle. Four masked men, carrying rifles, then appeared. They again demanded the keys and he went into the house to get them, followed by one of the men. They then told Harry Henry to go and start the car but he said he had no shoes on. One of the men replied, ‘You’ll not need them where you are going.’ They ordered his wife to remain inside, taking her husband out, and shortly afterwards she heard a burst of gunfire and saw her car being driven away towards the Loop. She ran out to find her husbands body. He had been shot four times in the head from close range. The gun used by the killers was taken from the body of Reserve Constable William Clements. The PIRA said that Harry Henry was killed because a firm owned by his brother carried out work for the security forces. On a previous occasion Harry Henry had been held by armed men who ordered him to drive a van containing a bomb to the RUC station at Coagh, but the plan went wrong and the men made off.
A number of other Henry Brothers’ workers have been murdered. In June 1994, the firm’s owner was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s birthday honours. Harry Henry was a member of the Ballymoughan Orange Lodge.

He was one of seven people killed when two UFF gunmen opened fire in the Rising sun lounge and restaurant at Greysteel in retaliation for the IRA’s Shankill Road bombing. An eighth person died later, he was an ex member of the B Special’s.
A witness said: ‘he was on his way to the toilet when they arrived. They came in through the door and shouted “Trick or treat,” he started to laugh and shout, but then he was hit in the stomach. He was in a very bad way. John was lying there and he told me everything would be all right and told me to look after his daughter and make sure she was okay. I bent down and kissed him on the head and told him he was going to be all right, but I knew he was dying because he was so cold. It was awful. He was shot dead as he left milk churns at his Tyrone Dairy Farm two miles from the border. He owned 200 acre farm and as he was leaving the churn at the farm gate on the Benburb to Auchnacloy road the gunmen struck about 9 o’clock. They pulled him off his tractor and shot him twice in the head from point blank range. His body was found in a clump of bushes a few yards away from his tractor. There were signs of a struggle, the detectives think he might have made a run for it. His father who lives in the farmhouse 100 yards away hear the shots and ran down the lane to find his son dying. The gunmen escaped in a car over the Monaghan border two miles away. Police and troops found the burned out car on Ballagh Bridge a few yards on the Tyrone side of the border.
