Private 4443 Thomas STOPPARD, 3/6th Sherwood Foresters.
Born 1883 to Samuel and Elizabeth (k/a Lizzie), nee Pettit 1891-1901 with his parents and siblings at Eyre Street, Clay Lane, Clay Cross, Derbyshire. 1901, occupation coal miner hewer. 1911 at same address with his widowed mother and siblings, occupation, coal miner.

Killed in action on the Somme, France 18th august 1916 aged 35. His mother was granted a war gratuity 8 December 1916 revised 23 September 1919.
Commemorated on a family memorial in Clay Cross, Derbyshire. At rest in Bellacourt Military Cemetery, Riviere, France

Notes from his army records.
He joined up 31 July 1915 aged 32 years and 10 months, occupation, coal miner. His mother was his next of kin and she resided c/o Mrs J Bunce, Market Street, Clay Cross. He spent 14 days in Military Hospital, Belton Park, Grantham from 10 October to 23 October 1915 suffering from tonsilitis.
Embarked for France 4 March 1916, then march to Infantry Base Dept to await mobilization to his regiment. Joined his regiment in the field 16 March 1916
