Thomas DEVEY

DEVEY, Thomas. Private, 28520, North Staffordshire Regiment who died on 29 November 1919 Age 29, Son of Mrs. Alice Devey and was the husband of S. Westwood (formerly Devey), of 2, Court, 3, House, Eagle Street, Wolverhampton. At rest in Wolverhampton Cemetery, Staffordshire. Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up on the 11th July 1916 and was posted to 11th North Staffordshire Regiment. . On the 1st September 1916 he was transferred 4th Training Reserve Brigade. On the 29th November 1916 he was transferred to the 25th Durham Light Infantry. He was again transferred to the337th Home Service Works Company, Labour Corps on the 28th April 1917. On the 2nd August 1917 he was posted to the 360th Reserve Employment Coy, on the 20th August 1917 he was posted to France and then he marched into in Base Depot. On the 18th September 1917 he was shot and wounded in the left arm and armpit at Ypres. He was treated in the field and later transferred to England for further treatment, name of hospital not recorded. He ended up in Queen Mary Convalescent Hospital, Roehampton, South East, London. He was on a Medical Board at this hospital, where he was discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service on the 31st July 1918. When he joined up he was aged 28 and 279 day old. Worked as a yardman and was married. He lived at 19, Middle Row, off Charles Street, Wolverhampton with his wife, Selina, nee Beddows, who he married on the 20th March 1913 at St George Church, Wolverhampton. At the time of the married they were living at 52, Church Lane, Wolverhampton. She was a spinster, but had two children prior to marriage. Thomas Beddows, born 9th April 1911 and Mary, born on the 5th December 1912, classed as illegitimate. At the time of his medical board he was separated from his wife, she gave an address of 56, Steel House Lane, Wolverhampton, prior address for his wife was 123 Horsley Fields, Wolverhampton.
