Theophilus Legate CALWELL. Military Cross. Lieutenant 9th Royal Fusiliers.
Born 29 May 1892 at Shore Street, Holywood to Walter and Rebecca Busby Calwell, nee Perry later of Spafield, Holywood.
1901 residing with his father and siblings at 19 Esplande, Holywood, County Down. His mother was visiting her brother-in-law and family at 38 Cromwell Road, Belfast.
1911 with his parents and siblings (Walter not mentioned) at 84 High Street, Holwood. Occupation, bank clerk.
London Gazette dated 20 November 1914. The undermentioned Cadets and ex-Cadets
of the Officers Training Corps to be temporary Second Lieutenants. Dated 19th
November 1914, he and many others were promoted.
London Gazette dated 25 August 1916. Military Cross Citation.

For conspicuous gallantry in action. He set a fine example and led with great dash,
being one of the first into the enemy's trenches, where he accounted for many of the
enemy. After pursuing the enemy, he went down a deep dug-out with only one companion, and captured Iwo officers and twenty men. Killed in action at Le Fleur 7 October 1916 aged 24. His father was granted a war gratuity 21 February 1917 revised 30 April 1917. His mother was granted a war gratuity 22 December 1919.
