Extended Description
Sydney Charles FRY. 2nd Lieutenant, 8th Training Squadron, Australian Flying Corps died 24th August 1918 aged 22. Son of Henry William and Alice Fry. Born at West Maitland, New South Wales. At rest in Leighterton Church Cemetery, Gloucestershire.
Some notes for his army records.
He joined up on the 18th July 1915 aged 19 and 10 months. He was posted as Trooper 1704, 17th Light Horse, he had previously served 2 years with 6th Light Horse. Occupation prior to enlistment, shop assistant. He was transferred to the A.F.C. on the 5th August 1917 then to the Depot at Wendover on the 27th August 1918. Appointed Cadet, Flying Officer, Pilot on the 12th April 1918. He was later posted to Minchinhampton Air Base to join 8th Training Squadron. He was killed on the 24th August 1918 at midday when the plane, Sopwith Camel C108 he was flying . The engine stalled on a turn and then started a slow spin into the ground. He died at the scene from multiple fractures
