Stillington, Yorkshire WW2 Church War Memorial

This memorial has been compiled with additional information by kind permission of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and from Ancestry.co.uk

This memorial is in St Nicholas Church, Stillington, Yorkshire.

To the Glory of God and in grateful remembrance of those who died in the World War 1939 - 1945.

AVERILL Edward Marwood. Sergeant 536124, Royal Air Force died 24th June 1944. Extract from http://www.stillingtoncommunityarchive.org/worldwar2.asp
Died 24/6/1944 whilst being transported by sea from Java to Japan when the ship he was travelling on was torpedoed by an American submarine and was sunk with a loss of over 300 lives. Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore

BULLEN Edward Geoffrey. (CWGC have Edward Gerald) Ordnance Artificer 2nd Class D/M38857, Royal Navy on H.M.S. Diamond, died at sea 29th April 1941 aged 31. Son of John Henry Bullen and of Melinda Bullen (nee Redding); husband of Edith Arnott Bullen (nee Robertson), of South Gosforth, Northumberland. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) Edward Gerald BULLEN of 42 Quarry Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth died on war service 27th April 1941. His effects went to Edith Arnott Bullen, his wife, and Melinda Bullen, his mother, widows. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

BURKS James Edward. (CWGC have BURKE) Private 4449024, 2nd Durham Light Infantry died 23rd August 1940 aged 28. Son of William and Helen Burke, of Hartlepool. At rest in Hartlepool West View Cemetery, Durham.

HORNER John. Corporal 4612893, 2nd Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment died 13th June 1943 aged 30. Son of Tom and Lizzie Horner, of Stillington, Yorkshire. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) John Horner of 3 Mossy Terrace, Stillington, Yorkshire died 13th June 1943 on war service. His effects went to Lizzie Horner, wife of Tom Horner, his parents. At rest in Imphal War Cemetery, India

HUTCHINSON John Leslie. Stoker 2nd Class P/KX 119108, Royal Navy on H.M.S. Kashmir died 23rd May 1941 aged 20. Under heavy and sustained air attacks by German aircraft during which ship was hit and sank within two minutes in position 34.40N 24.10E south of Gavo, Crete. Extract from www.naval-history.net Son of John Best Hutchinson and Doris Hutchinson, of Stillington, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hamshire.

JOHNSON Arthur. Lance Corporal 4534200, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment died 11th March 1942 aged 28. Son of Charles and Amelia Johnson, of Stillington, Yorkshire. At rest in Nicosia War Cemetery, Cyprus.

PETTY Alfred Herbert. Pilot Office, Air Gunner 156355, 10 Squadron, Royal Air Force (VR) died 3rd November 1943 aged 22. Son of Herbert John Thomas Petty and Emily Petty, of Stillington, Yorkshire. At rest in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

PRATT Leslie Harry. Private 7901440, 1st West Kent Regiment died 29th April 1945 aged 26. Son of Harry and Mary Alice Pratt, of Aldborough. At rest in St Nicholas Churchyard, Stillington, Yorkshire (He is in the extension, short distance from the church. Down the road, right, to the rear of the church burial ground on the left)

SELL Horace. D.F.M. Sergeant 1357695, 106Squadron Royal Air Force (VR) died 8th November 1941. At one stage he was stationed at RAF Coningsby) Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
