AKED Robert Basil Cautley (M.C.) Lieutenant 2/5th North Staffordshire Regiment died 21st March 1918 aged 20. Son of Henry Edward and Eleanor Aked, of "Mablethorpe", Leeds Rd., Harrogate, Yorks. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
ALLEN, R (It may be the following) Corporal B/201547 Raymond ALLEN, 1/8th London Regiment, Post Office Rifles, formerly Private 072030 Mechanical Transport, Royal Army Service Corps, killed in action 27th April 1918. Born in Harrogate and enlisted at Doncaster, both in Yorkshire. Son of Edith Jane who was granted a war gratuity on the 2nd December 1918, revised on the 13th December 1919. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
BELL Donald Simpson. (VC) Second Lieutenant, 9th Yorkshire Regiment died 10th July 1916 aged 25. Former professional football player. Son of Smith and Annie Bell, of Western Flats, Queen's Road, Harrogate, husband of Rhoda Bell, of Wilmslow, Cheshire. At rest in Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France
Citation
An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 29740, dated 8th Sept., 1916, records the following:- "For most conspicuous bravery. During an attack a very heavy enfilade fire was opened on the attacking company by a hostile machine gun. 2nd Lt. Bell immediately, and on his own initiative, crept up a communication trench and then, followed by Corpl. Colwill and Pte. Batey, rushed across the open under very heavy fire and attacked the machine gun, shooting the firer with his revolver, and destroying gun and personnel with bombs. This very brave act saved many lives and ensured the success of the attack. Five days later this very gallant officer lost his life performing a very similar act of bravery.

BRADLEY Charles. Lance Corporal 26057, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment died 24th September 1918. At rest in Thilloy Road Cemetery, Beaulencourt, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up on the 11th December 1915 aged 39 and 3 months, occupation, cab driver. He was the husband of Ada Annie nee Wray who he married on the 24th January 1905 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire. They were living at 55 Tower Street, Harrogate with their two children. Charles Edward, born 9th July 1907 and Eliza Lily born 22nd August 1909, both in Harrogate. In 1911 he and his family were still living at 55 Tower Street, After he had completed his training he was posted to France on the 30th November 1916, marched into 37th Infantry Brigade Depot at Etaples. On the 14th December 1916 he was posted to the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment. While at the front he was wounded in action on the 23rd September 1918 and the following day died gunshot wounds to his buttocks and left leg. He was laid to rest at Thilloy Road British Cemetery, one and quarter miles south of Peronne, France.
BURTON Roland. Private 44792, 7th Lincolnshire Regiment died 22nd March 1918 aged 19. Son of Rachel Burton, of 27, Cheltenham Crescent, Harrogate, and the late Elliott Burton. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
CARRICK Robert Lawson. Sergeant 24062, 13th Canadian Infantry died of wounds 26th April 1915 aged 29 on No 16 Ambulance Train, Rouen. Son of Robert Lawson Carrick and Mary Jane Carrick, of 55, Drake Street, Cote St. Paul, Montreal. He was born on the 2nd August 1886 in Harrogate, Yorkshire. He joined up aged 29 on the 23rd September 1914, occupation, carpenter. He previously served 4 years with the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. In 1901 aged 15 he was living with his parents and siblings at 6 Cheltenahm Toad, Harrogate. Employed as an errand boy. On the 26th April 1907 he embarked from Liverpool, England bound for Quebec, Canada on ship, Virginian. At rest in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France.
CARRICK George Henry. Private 3/9655, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment died 4th March 1917 aged 44. Son od George and Harriet Ann of the parish of St Peter, Harrogate. Husband of Clara Louisa Carrick, of 5, Nydd Vale Terrace, Harrogate. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
CHAPMAN George Henry. Private 172150, 9th Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) formerly private 65630, Northumberland Fusiliers, died 25th October 1918. Son of George Chapman and Amy of 68 Union Street, Harrogate. At rest in Moorseele Military Cemetery, Belgium.
CHAPMAN Edward Deighton. Able Seaman J.20214 Royal Navy on H.M.S. Queen Mary. Born 20th October 1896 at Knaresborough and died 31st May 1916. His next of kin was his mother Amy of 3 Union Street, Harrogate. In 1901 he was living with his parents at 22 Tower Street, Harrogate aged 4

Born 20th October 1896 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire, occupation, errand boy. Trained at H.M.S. Ganges, Shore Base as Boy Class 2 aged 16 from the 19th September 1912 to 13th February 1913. Boy Class 1 still at Ganges, leaving on the 25th March 1913. On the 26th March 1913 still Boy Clas 1 now on HMS Edgar, HMS Noctine from 5th August 1913 to 15th September 1913. Now on HMS Queen Mary as of the 16th March 1913. The 30th April 1914 now Ordinary Seaman, 7th January 1915, Able Seaman still on the Queen Mary. He enlisted on the 20th October 1914 for a period of 12 years

Some notes from his army records.
He joined on the 15th July 1914 gave his occupation as motor engineer. He was post to the 6th Battalion at Broadmeadows, Victoria, Australia. His place of birth given by him was Ohio, U.S.A. and his next of kin his mother, Annie Elizabeth Colls of Spa Hydro, Harrogate, Yorkshire. He had previously served for three and half years as Sergeant with the Cambridge University Corps, attached to Cambridge Volunteers. Prior the that he was for 1 year a member of the Bakewell Rifle Club. After he had completed his training he embarked for England from Melbourne on the 19th October 1914 on H.M.A.T. A20 Hororata. Then from England to Alexandria, date not recorded.
On the 1st January 1915 he was promoted to Corporal in Egypt, then killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula 25th April 1915.

EDGECOMBE Arthur Wilfred. Midshipman, Royal Navy on H.M.S. Verulam Killed by a mine explosion off the island of Seiskari in the Gulf of Finland on the night between 3–4 September 1919, the ship sank. Death recorded 3rd September 1919, aged 18. Son of Wilfrid Edgecombe, M.D., and Jane Edgecombe, of 17, Victoria Avenue, Harrogate. Served 2 years in H.M.S. "Agamemnon" in the Mediterranian, 1917-1918. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

HOLMES Henry (Harry) Betham. Corporal 200603, 1/5th West Yorkshire Regiment. Born on the 16th December 1894 and was killed in action 28th September 1916. Born and enlisted at Harrogate, lived in Pontefract, Yorkshire. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at 15 St Mary's Walk, Harrogate, his effects went to his mother, Mary Holmes, wife of Henry Angelo Holmes. In 1911 aged 16 he was an apprentice joiner. He is at rest in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme, France.
