AKED Robert Basil Cautley (M.C.) Lieutenant 2/5th North Staffordshire Regiment died 21st March 1918 aged 20. Son of Henry Edward and Eleanor Aked, of "Mablethorpe", Leeds Rd., Harrogate, Yorks. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

ALLEN, R (It may be the following) Corporal B/201547 Raymond ALLEN, 1/8th London Regiment, Post Office Rifles, formerly Private 072030 Mechanical Transport, Royal Army Service Corps, killed in action 27th April 1918. Born in Harrogate and enlisted at Doncaster, both in Yorkshire. Son of Edith Jane who was granted a war gratuity on the 2nd December 1918, revised on the 13th December 1919. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.

BELL Donald Simpson. (VC) Second Lieutenant, 9th Yorkshire Regiment died 10th July 1916 aged 25. Former professional football player. Son of Smith and Annie Bell, of Western Flats, Queen's Road, Harrogate, husband of Rhoda Bell, of Wilmslow, Cheshire. At rest in Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France
Citation
An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 29740, dated 8th Sept., 1916, records the following:- "For most conspicuous bravery. During an attack a very heavy enfilade fire was opened on the attacking company by a hostile machine gun. 2nd Lt. Bell immediately, and on his own initiative, crept up a communication trench and then, followed by Corpl. Colwill and Pte. Batey, rushed across the open under very heavy fire and attacked the machine gun, shooting the firer with his revolver, and destroying gun and personnel with bombs. This very brave act saved many lives and ensured the success of the attack. Five days later this very gallant officer lost his life performing a very similar act of bravery.

BRADLEY Charles. Lance Corporal 26057, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment died 24th September 1918. At rest in Thilloy Road Cemetery, Beaulencourt, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up on the 11th December 1915 aged 39 and 3 months, occupation, cab driver. He was the husband of Ada Annie nee Wray who he married on the 24th January 1905 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire. They were living at 55 Tower Street, Harrogate with their two children. Charles Edward, born 9th July 1907 and Eliza Lily born 22nd August 1909, both in Harrogate. In 1911 he and his family were still living at 55 Tower Street, After he had completed his training he was posted to France on the 30th November 1916, marched into 37th Infantry Brigade Depot at Etaples. On the 14th December 1916 he was posted to the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment. While at the front he was wounded in action on the 23rd September 1918 and the following day died gunshot wounds to his buttocks and left leg. He was laid to rest at Thilloy Road British Cemetery, one and quarter miles south of Peronne, France.

BURTON Roland. Private 44792, 7th Lincolnshire Regiment died 22nd March 1918 aged 19. Son of Rachel Burton, of 27, Cheltenham Crescent, Harrogate, and the late Elliott Burton. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

CARRICK Robert Lawson. Sergeant 24062, 13th Canadian Infantry died of wounds 26th April 1915 aged 29 on No 16 Ambulance Train, Rouen. Son of Robert Lawson Carrick and Mary Jane Carrick, of 55, Drake Street, Cote St. Paul, Montreal. He was born on the 2nd August 1886 in Harrogate, Yorkshire. He joined up aged 29 on the 23rd September 1914, occupation, carpenter. He previously served 4 years with the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. In 1901 aged 15 he was living with his parents and siblings at 6 Cheltenahm Toad, Harrogate. Employed as an errand boy. On the 26th April 1907 he embarked from Liverpool, England bound for Quebec, Canada on ship, Virginian. At rest in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France.

CARRICK George Henry. Private 3/9655, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment died 4th March 1917 aged 44. Son od George and Harriet Ann of the parish of St Peter, Harrogate. Husband of Clara Louisa Carrick, of 5, Nydd Vale Terrace, Harrogate. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

CHAPMAN George Henry. Private 172150, 9th Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) formerly private 65630, Northumberland Fusiliers, died 25th October 1918. Son of George Chapman and Amy of 68 Union Street, Harrogate. At rest in Moorseele Military Cemetery, Belgium.

CHAPMAN Edward Deighton. Able Seaman J.20214 Royal Navy on H.M.S. Queen Mary. Born 20th October 1896 at Knaresborough and died 31st May 1916. His next of kin was his mother Amy of 3 Union Street, Harrogate. In 1901 he was living with his parents at 22 Tower Street, Harrogate aged 4

Born 20th October 1896 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire, occupation, errand boy. Trained at H.M.S. Ganges, Shore Base as Boy Class 2 aged 16 from the 19th September 1912 to 13th February 1913. Boy Class 1 still at Ganges, leaving on the 25th March 1913. On the 26th March 1913 still Boy Clas 1 now on HMS Edgar, HMS Noctine from 5th August 1913 to 15th September 1913. Now on HMS Queen Mary as of the 16th March 1913. The 30th April 1914 now Ordinary Seaman, 7th January 1915, Able Seaman still on the Queen Mary. He enlisted on the 20th October 1914 for a period of 12 years

Son of Frank George and Annie Elizabeth Colls, (nee Holdich) of 16, Mount Parade, Harrogate, England. Native of Sand Hill, Sandersky, Ohio, U.S.A. Commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli)
Some notes from his army records.
He joined on the 15th July 1914 gave his occupation as motor engineer. He was post to the 6th Battalion at Broadmeadows, Victoria, Australia. His place of birth given by him was Ohio, U.S.A. and his next of kin his mother, Annie Elizabeth Colls of Spa Hydro, Harrogate, Yorkshire. He had previously served for three and half years as Sergeant with the Cambridge University Corps, attached to Cambridge Volunteers. Prior the that he was for 1 year a member of the Bakewell Rifle Club. After he had completed his training he embarked for England from Melbourne on the 19th October 1914 on H.M.A.T. A20 Hororata. Then from England to Alexandria, date not recorded.
On the 1st January 1915 he was promoted to Corporal in Egypt, then killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula 25th April 1915.

DRURY John Light. Private G/59556, 26th Royal Fusiliers, formerly Private 12378, 21st King's Royal Rifles, died 9th November 1918 aged 21. Son of Daniel and Alice Drury, of Beckwithshaw, Harrogate. At rest in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.

EDGECOMBE Arthur Wilfred. Midshipman, Royal Navy on H.M.S. Verulam Killed by a mine explosion off the island of Seiskari in the Gulf of Finland on the night between 3–4 September 1919, the ship sank. Death recorded 3rd September 1919, aged 18. Son of Wilfrid Edgecombe, M.D., and Jane Edgecombe, of 17, Victoria Avenue, Harrogate. Served 2 years in H.M.S. "Agamemnon" in the Mediterranian, 1917-1918. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

HADDLESEY James William Private 48001, 25th Durham Light Infantry, transferred to as Private 21215, 36th Company, Labour Corps died suddenly from pneumonia on the 18th December 1917. He was the son of Charles and Elizabeth of 1 Lusby Grove, Harrogate. His widow Nellie, nee Hillman was granted a war gratuity on the 29th June 1918, revised on the 21st November 1919. HODSON William Campbell McDougall. Corporal 60678, 1st West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 19th September 1918 aged 19. He was born on the 31st March 1899 at Harrogate to William Campbell Hodson and Emily Hodson, of The Stag Hotel, Harrogate, Yorks, . HOLMES Henry (Harry) Betham. Corporal 200603, 1/5th West Yorkshire Regiment. Born on the 16th December 1894 and was killed in action 28th September 1916. Born and enlisted at Harrogate, lived in Pontefract, Yorkshire. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at 15 St Mary's Walk, Harrogate, his effects went to his mother, Mary Holmes, wife of Henry Angelo Holmes. In 1911 aged 16 he was an apprentice joiner. He is at rest in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme, France.

HOOD William Henry. Private 3/10123, A Company, 1st West Yorkshire Regiment died 24th August 1915 aged 40. Husband of Hannah Hood, of 9, Cambridge Place, Harrogate, Yorks. Native of Wetherby, Yorkshire. At rest in La Brique Military Cemetery, No1, Belgium.

Born and enlisted at Harrogate, Yorkshire husband of Phoebe nee Presely who he married in 1909 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire. She was granted a war gratuity on the 19th May 1919. LIGHT Thomas Richard. Private 66867, 12/13th Northumberland Fusiliers died 2nd November 1918. Born in 1899 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire. He was the son of John William and Sarah Jane of (1901) 11 Tower Street, Harrogate. He died a prisoner of war, Prisoner War Hospital, Stargard. He is at rest Berlin South Western Cemetery, Berlin, Germany, previously West Berlin, Cold War Period.


LINFOOT Fred Miller (MM) Sergeant 7535, West Yorkshire Regiment, also served with the 25th Northumberland Fusiliers army number 60769, died 14th July 1918. Born in 1883 to Henry and Emma Ann of Castle Street, Spofforth, Harrogate. His widow Matilda Sutton, nee Lockley (born 1887) was granted a war gratuity on the 16th October 1918, revised on the 26th November 1919. (The 1911 census has Linfort) He was living with his wife and son, William Henry aged 6 months at 5 Powell Street High Harrogate, Yorkshire, his occupation, brewers drayman. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


LONG Wilfred Arthur. Sergeant 200954, 2/5th West Yorkshire Regiment died 14th June 1916 aged 20. Son of Thomas and Hannah Long, of 3, Granville Rd., Harrogate, Yorks. Served nearly four years. His mother Hannah was granted a war gratuity on the 16th November 1918 revised on the 10th December 1919. At rest in Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

LUPTON Selwyn. Private 1380, 1/5th West Yorkshire Regiment died 10th January 1916 aged 20. Son of Frank and Alice Lupton, of Harrogate. At rest in Harlow Hill Cemetery, Harrogate, Yorkshire.

MALKIN Norman Harry. Second Lieutenant, 12th York and Lancaster Regiment died 14th May 1917 aged 25. Son of Harry Malkin, of Leeds, husband of Ruthetta Malkin (formerly Whiteley). At rest in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.

ROBERTS (Memorial has ROBBERTS) Robin Henry. Private 83431 Royal Army Medical Corps attached to the 9th East Lancashire Regiment died 10th April 1918 aged 28. Son of Samuel and Esther Roberts, of 15, Swan Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire. At rest in Doiran Military Cemetery, Greece.

ROTHERY James William Private G/13917, 1st East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) died 2nd June 1919 at Becketts Park Hospital, Leeds. He lived at 4 Montpelier Parade, Harrogate and his effects went to Hannah Haley, his mother, widow. Her maiden name was Ineson. He was born on the 5th September 1876, baptised on the 26th November 1876 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Batley Carr, Yorkshire. In 1901 he was living with his parents Joseph and Hannah at 121 Cold Bath Road, Harrogate. In 1911, now aged 32 he was living with his mother, now a widow at 7 St Mary's Walk, Harrogate, occupation, professional cricketer for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. At rest in Harlow Hill Cemetery, Harrogate, Yorkshire.

He joined up on the 8th December 1915 aged 39 and was posted to the Royal Fusiliers as Private 5843. He was living with his parents at 4 Montpellier Parade, Harrogate. After he had completed his training he was posted to France on the 2nd April 1917. On the 29th April 1917 he was transferred to B Company, The Buffs as private 13917. On the 25th May 1917 he was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound to he left arm resulting in many compound fractures. On the same day he was treated at No18 Field Ambulance, then No 58 Casualty Clearing Station, and No 21 Ambulance Train where the next day, 29th he was admitted into No 13 General Hospital, Boulogne. 1st June 1917 he was transferred to England on Hospital Ship, St David and was admitted into Suffolk Hospital, Ampton Hall, Bury St Edmunds the next day 2nd. He was discharged from hospital on the 8th August 1917. No record was given as to what happened to him after being discharged until the 6th September 1917 when he was admitted into the East Leeds War Hospital still with the same wounds. On the 4th July 1918 he was discharged. Date not known he was admitted into 2nd Northern General Hospital, Leeds where he died from compound fractures and septicaemia of the wound 2nd June 1919.

Boat No 19 died at sea of Gibraltar 25th April 1918. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lupton and Mrs. Shaw, of 1, Belmont Rd., Harrogate, Yorks. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
HMTB 88,89,90, built by Yarrow 1894/5, 112 tons TB88,89, 100 tons TB90, Armed with 3 x 3 pounder guns and 3 x 14 inch torpedos. All served at Gibralter 1914-1918, TB88,89 sold 1919, TB90 capsized off Gibralter 25th April 1918.

SIXTON George Herbert. Private 42729, 1st Leicestershire Regiment died 20th September 1918 aged 19. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sixton, of 3, Willington Square, Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.

THOMPSON Reginald. Private 25861, 17th West Yorkshire Regiment died 14th July 1916 aged 24. Son of Albert and Mary Ann Thompson, of 50, Gladstone Street, Oatlands Mount, Harrogate, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

TOPHAM A Private G/ 32531, 1st Middlesex Regiment killed in action 23rd April 1917. (Served as Frederick HARRISON). Brother of Mrs. Sarah Ann Baker, nee Topham, of 51, Belford Row, Lower Street, Harrogate. Yorkshire. She was granted a war gratuity on the 21st September 1917, revised on the 14th November 1919. She was the daughter of Joseph and Alice. At rest in Heninel-Croisilles Road Cemetery, France.

Lance Sergeant 200060, Arthur Carr TOPHAM 1/6th West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 11th October 1918 aged 23. Son of Thomas William and Jane Topham, of Harrogate. At rest in Iwuy Communal Cemetery, France.

He joined up on the 28th March 1911 aged 17 and 5 months, occupation, cabinet maker and he lived at 15 Strawberry Dale Avenue, Harrogate. Embodied service on the 5th August 1915 as private. Promoted to Lance Corporal on the 11th February 1916 and Corporal on the 21st March 1916. On the 28th March 1916 he re-engaged for a period of 4 years. After he had completed his training he embarked from Southampton on the 5th January 1917, disembarking at Havre the next day. While at the front he was wounded by shrapnel to his chin, left arm and buttocks on the 3rd May 1917. After being treated at the front by various medical facilities he was admitted to 8th General Hospital, Rouen. From there he was invalided to Southampton on Hospital Ship, Grantully Ole. He was admitted into Western General Hospital, Manchester on the 17th May 1917 and discharged fit for war service on the 21st August 1917. At the front he was promoted to Lance Sergeant on the 14th December 1917 and was killed in action on the 11th October 1918.
Three of his brothers served in the army in the Great War.
William Gordon Topham. Company Sergeant Major 7757058, Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Frederick Walter Topham. Private 8138 Dorset Regiment. He was living with his mother, Jane at 37 Mannville Terrace, Bradford in 1916 and Christopher who fell in 1917. The other two survived the war.

TOPHAM Christopher. Company Sergeant Major 200156, B Company, 1/5th West Yorkshire Regiment died 9th October 1917 aged 30. Son of Thomas William and Jane Topham, of Harrogate. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

He joined up on the 29th March 1913 aged 25 and 9 months, occupation, bricklayer. Born on the 19th June 1887, baptised at St Peters, Harrogate on the 17th July 1887 and he lived with his parents at 15 Strawberry Dale Avenue, Harrogate. He was posted as private 1388 to the West Yorkshire Regiment. No records for the Great War survived the blitz in WW2

WALDBY Robert Alfred. Private 210531, 2/5th West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 20th July 1918. Born at St Lukes, Harrogate, to William and Mary Ellen of 34 West Lea Avenue, Harrogate and was the husband of Margery, nee Cuckson who was granted a war gratuity on the 6th December 1916, revised on the 8th December 1919. He was married on the 16th April 1916 to Margery Cuckson who was 21 and lived at 1 Princes Villa Road, Harrogate. He was aged 20, hairdresser and lived at Durrington Mill, son of William. At rest in Marfaux British Cemetery, France.

WASLING Richard John. Private 36293, 12th Durham Light Infantry killed in action 27th October 1918 aged 21. Son of Elizabeth Smith, of Lamwath House, 10, Cheltenham Parade, Harrogate. At rest in Tezze British Cemetery, Italy.

WEBSTER George Sydney. Private 105715, 1st King's Liverpool Regiment killed in action 29th September 1918. Born at Law Laith, lived in Harrogate, both in Yorkshire. His widow Ann E was granted a war gratuity on the 22nd February 1919, revised on the 5th December 1919. At rest in Flesquieres Hill British Cemetery, France.

YEATES Olive. Born 24th September 1899, baptised at St Peter's Harrogate on the 1st October 1899. Daughter of George William and Miriam nee Wlker, of 42, Unity Grove, Harrogate. She was killed at the Barnbow Shell Factory, No 1. National Filling Factory, Crossgates, Leeds who lost their lives in the explosion 5th December 1916 aged 17.
