St Mary's and Christ Church World War One, War Memorial.
ST MARY'S
Brigadier General Randle Barnett BARKER. D.S.O., and Bar. late 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Commanding 99th Brigade.
Killed on the 24th March 1918 aged 48. at Gueudecourt. Son of Maj. John Barnett Barker (late Northumberland Fusiliers) husband of Ellinor Gertrude, nee Hobson, of Pant-y-goitre, Abergavenny, Mon. At rest in Albert Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
DSO Citation – 20th October 1916. Capt. (temp. Lt-Col.) Randle Barnett Barker, Royal Fusiliers.
For conspicuous gallantry during operations. He took over and organised the defences of a wood with great skill, after making a personal reconnaissance of the whole wood under shell and machine gun fire. He has done other fine work and has displayed great personal bravery.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an assault his battalion was compelled to withdraw from its objective owing to heavy casualties and to its flank being unsupported. At this most critical moment he reorganised and rallied all the men of his brigade who were within reach, and by his promptitude and fine leadership won back most of the objective, and maintained it until relieved.

At rest in Gaza War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza)
Sone notes from his army record. He joined up on the 9th November 1912 aged 19 years and 6 months. Occupation, postman. His brother, Robert Frederick Brown of 17, Priory Road, Abergavenny was his next of kin. He embarked for the the M.E.F. from Devonport on the 17th July 1915, killed in action on the 25th March 1917.
Rifleman 650706, Lionel Hubert CARR. C Company, 2/21st London Regiment, 1st Surrey Rifles, killed in action 31st October 1917 aged 26. Son of William Robert and Emma Annie Elizabeth Carr, of Lulworth, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Lulworth, Monk Street, Abergavenny. His effects went to his father, William Robert Carr, organist. 1891 census he was living with parents, William Robert and Emma Ann Elizabeth at 2 Clifton Villas, Ledbury, 1901 with his parents at Luidin House,32 Upper Monmouth Street, Abergavenny. 1911, now aged 20 and a student at the Church Of England Training College, Swindon Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. At rest in Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza)
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 2nd September 1914 and was posted to the City of London Reserve Battalion, Territorial Force as Rifleman 1876, later changed to 650706. At the time of his enlistment he was living at the Temperance Hotel, North Street, Romford, Essex. After he a completed his training he embarked from Soton, on the 24th June 1916, to joined the BEF in France, disembarking at L'Havre the next day. On the 30th November 1917 he embarked Marseilles to join the Salonika Force, disembarking Salonika on the 8th December 1916. Finally he embarked Salonika 17th June 1917 to join the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, disembarking on the 18th June 1917. The 30th October 1917 he was killed in action in Syria and laid to rest the next day.
Lance Sergeant, (memorial has Sergeant.) 10510, Louis COOMBEY. 6th Bedfordshire Regiment killed in action 9th August 1916 aged 26. Native of Lugwardine Hertfordshire, son of Oliver and Emily Blanche Coombey, of 40, Cross Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. In 1911 he was working as a shop assistant at the home of Mrs and Mrs Edward and Emily Cleaton of 39, Granville Terrace, Abertillery, Monmouthshire.
His brother, William Henry, also fell.
Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
Private 1893, William Henry COOMBEY. 3rd Monmouthshire killed in action on the 11th May 1915. son of Oliver and Emily Blanche Coombey, of 40, Cross Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. Occupation in 1911 was a bakers assistant.
Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
2nd Lieutenant, Leonard Gosse COOPER. 4th South Wales Borderers killed in action on the 9th August 1915 at the Dardanelles. Son of Walter Percy and Emily Francis of Rockdale, North Street, Abergavenny. 1911 he was s student at Llandovery College, Monmouthshire aged 18. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli)
Sergeant 290786, William Hayward DAY. 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment killed in action 3rd October 1918, aged 30. Native of Colcott, Gloucestershire, son of Jesse and Mary Ann of Fossebridge, near Chedworth, Gloucestershire, enlisted at Abergavenny, husband of Kate Dorothy Day, of 34, Park Street, Abergavenny. Monmouthshire. At rest in Bellicourt British Cemetery, France
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 3rd May 1915 and he was living at 94, Ross Road, Abergavenny. He went up through the ranks very quick. Lance Corporal on the 16th September 1915, the Corporal, Sergeant on the 24th December 1915. He was posted to France on the 9th November 1917, killed in action 3rd October 1918. He left a widow and one child, William Ernest Day born 3rd October 1916.
2nd Lieutenant, James Graham GLENDINNING, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment attached to 57th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, died on the 2nd December 1917 aged 20. He flew a in a Airco DH4. 2 seater biplane. Son of James and Margaret A. Glendinning, of Larchfield, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. At rest in Harlebeke New British Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Private (Memorial has drummer) 1451, Ewart Charles GOODE. 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment killed in action 2nd May 1915 aged 18. Son of Charles and Tessa Mary , of 41, Albert Road, Abergavenny, occupation, book binder. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
Corporal 28173, Henry GWYTHER, 6th King's Shropshire Light Infantry, died on the 1st November 1918 aged 19. Son of Henry and Martha Gwyther, of 12, Monk Street., Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. His brother, Frederick , joined up on the 6th January 1913 as Private 10970, Monmouthshire Regiment, Territorial Force. He served 294 days, before he joined the regular army, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment. He survived the war. At rest in Monmouth New Cemetery, Monmouthshire.
Sergeant 13697, Ivor John JACKSON. Royal Air Force died 2nd March 1919 aged 23. Son of George and Melinda Jackson, of 25, Albert Road, Abergavenny. Native of Llantillio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, At rest in Abergavenny New Cemetery, Monmouthshire.
Gunner 84863, James George JONES, 262 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 1st July 1917 aged 20. Son of Tom and Margaret Jones, of 36, Lower Monk Street, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. At rest in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Captain, Jestyn Llewelyn MANSEL. 7th Dragoon Guards died 20th December 1914. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France and also on the St Teilos Church with Bettws Chapel . Born in 1881 at Caerleon, Monmouthshire.

Private 1536, Charles Leopold SAVEGAR, A Company, 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment killed in action on the 8th May 1915 aged 18. Son of George and Alice Savegar, of 8, Asylum Terrace, Firs Road, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. Mobilized August, 1914. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
Private, Benjamin George WEAVER, 3rd Worcestershire Regiment. No record could be found relating to him having served or died with the Worcestershire Regiment. He was born in 1896 to George J and Clara, nee Vearnalls, in Abergavenny. In (1911), his parents were at 117 High Street, Gloucester City. In 1911 he was a farm labourer and living with Mrs Clara Guise at Two Gates, Cradley Heath, West Midlands.
There was a Benjamin WEAVER who served as Private 1639 and the 200124 with the 1/7th Worcestershire Regiment. Joined up on the 1st January 1912, embodied service on the 5th August 1914. Saw service in France and Italy, from the 31st March 1915 to 6th April 1919. Slightly wounded in the leg in Rouen, France about 1915. He was in Tidworth Military Hospital with and urine infection from the 12th July 1916 to 5th August 1916. Demobilized about the 6th April 1919 to Walker House, Tenbury. This soldiers father was called Benjamin from Eastham, near Tenbury.

P. of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, and of Emily Walbeoffe-Wilson, of Les Oliviers, Cap D'Antibes, A. M., France. At rest in Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery, Belgium.

died on active service in Mesopotamia on the 15th June 1916 of Cholera. Son of William and Sarah of 23, Trinity Street, Abergavenny, occupation (1911) labourer. At rest Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Private 17010, James George Christmas HARDING. 4th Grenadier Guards killed in action 7th July 1917 in Belgium. Native of Prendergast, Pembrokeshire. He was the son Richard Charles of Alice nee Evans. In 1901he and his siblings were living with their mother and step father , John Beet Merlins Hill, Pembroke. 1911 aged 18 he was serving with the South Wales Borders stationed at Brecon Military Barracks. His father was a widower when he married Alice Evans in 1887 in Haverfordwest. His first wife was Sarah Evans who he married in 1872 also in Haverfordwest. At rest in Canada Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
