Looks like an FN FAL with a 30 round magazine from the Bren L4A1 to me. The front hand guard was removed to lighten the weapon and/or make the XM148 actually fit. Wouldn't want to lug that monster through the jungle!

Correct there @Mike1976 , it's an L1A1 SLR with a 30rnd mag. The mags were actually from the L2A1 AR however they did fit the Bren also. The foreguard furniture was removed to enable the fitting of the XM418. The resulting weapon was used pretty exclusively by SASR and known as "the bitch"

Yes the L2A1 came before the 7.62 Bren. The reason I mentioned the magazines being from the Bren is that I read a book on (British?) SAS using these specifically after previously having used converted .303 magazines before 7.62 30 rounders were available. I assumed SASR might have done the same.
Not sure why you'd want to attach a UGL, it's heavy enough as is. At least three members of the squad have M16s that would be far better suited.
No mate, they were used in the 60's and early 70's. We've moved on since then
Line infantry used the M79 "thumper" and they remained in service for many years

With the SLR it would have been a much more simpler process than an M-16 for the unit armorer in country to come up with a method to attach the XM on the SLR, especially with it being a lot more ridged base to work with. Clean M-16's or Colts may have been more for the likes of Ptl Scouts, Sigs or Ptl Commanders with some just having a preference for 7.62 over 5.56. They may have had preference for carrying HE vs an MG or rifle if the task required it.
